When doctors diagnosed Sylvie Baele with leukemia, she turned to the same source that had helped her rebuild her life before: her bike.

Thanks to innovative care and cancer research at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, Sylvie’s disease is now managed — and she’s back in the saddle, leading Second Chance Bikes and riding in LOWVELO to fund the next generation of cures. 🚲 🔬✨

“If I had had ALL 10 years ago, I would 100% be dead right now,” she says. “It’s because of cancer research that I am here.” 🙌 Link to Sylvie's story in comments.

What makes you, you? The way you think, the way you speak, the way you move.

At the Murray Center for Research in Parkinson’s Disease at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), donor-funded studies are unlocking new ways to restore movement and independence. 🙌

Donations to MUSC research help Parkinson’s patients and fuel bold studies to improve care and understanding of the disease.

Marti’s Wish for GI Cancer Fund was established at the MUSC Foundation in 2016 by Mr. Harry Parnell in memory of his late wife, Marti. This fund supports critical research, education and outreach for GI cancers, with special consideration given to research focusing on signet ring cell carcinoma and H. pylori bacteria.

Sadly, Marti passed away 10 years ago today, on October 15th, 2015. Her last wish to her friend, Sunita Patel, and husband, Harry, was to donate time and money to pursue the education of primary care physicians and cancer experts to recognize Signet Ring Cell Cancer.

Harry not only holds his own personal fundraisers, but he also makes annual contributions to the fund through his procurement of rare collectible whiskeys that are auctioned at Hollings’ yearly signature food and wine event, Gourmet and Grapes. He was even honored for his outstanding fundraising efforts and dedication to supporting cancer research in 2023 with the Gourmet and Grapes “Courage in Cancer” award.

Most recently, he collaborated with Hollings’ administration to establish the Marti’s Wish Award, which presented two Hollings scientists $50,000 each for their research projects studying gastrointestinal cancers. Today especially, we celebrate the memory of Marti and all that her last wish and her husband Harry have done for Hollings and other patients. Thank you!

At the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), philanthropy gives researchers the freedom to ask “what if?” and the support to find out. A $15,000 gift to test a new Parkinson’s therapy led to a $3.5 million national research effort that’s changing what’s possible for patients in South Carolina and beyond. 🤍

Donations to MUSC research help Parkinson’s patients and fuel bold studies to improve care and understanding of the disease.

Once again, the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital is ranked the #1 children’s hospital in South Carolina, and among the best in the nation in six specialties, including a top 5 national ranking in pediatric cardiology and heart surgery. 🏆

Behind every ranking is a story 📖 — like 12-year-old Skylar Brown, who received a heart and kidney transplant on the same day and is now thriving. 💙 Read Skylar’s story in the comments below.

These rankings honor the compassion, expertise and dedication of our MUSC Children’s Health care teams, who work every day to provide the best possible care for kids and families across South Carolina. 🙌

đź’™ It warms our hearts to see our alumni help those following in their footsteps -- whether it's through mentorship, sharing inspirational stories or even financial support.

The MUSC College of Nursing () celebrated all three during their recent Scholars & Benefactor Celebration, where scholarship students met with the donors -- many of whom are MUSC alums -- who helped make those scholarships possible.

Thanks for the inspiration, support and reminding us how gratifying it is to give back.

At MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, researchers are testing a promising new drug that attacks head and neck cancers by cutting off their energy supply. 🔋

Unlike chemotherapy or radiation, this approach leaves healthy cells mostly untouched — offering hope for safer, more effective treatments in the future.

💡 Did you know this kind of cancer research is happening right here at Hollings? If you’re passionate about advancing cancer research, supporting Hollings helps bring these kinds of breakthroughs to patients and families in South Carolina. 💙 https://buff.ly/IzxnzHM
