Look what’s on its way to mailboxes now! The fall 2025 edition of Inner Circle — our magazine celebrating donors who help change what’s possible through MUSC — is hot off the press. šŸ“°

Our Possibility Circles recognize donors who make a sustained impact on MUSC’s mission through their ongoing support, including those who make future gifts through their estates. Inner Circle highlights how their generosity is changing what's possible for families and communities across South Carolina. ā¤ļø

We hope you enjoy the stories we’ve put together to showcase how philanthropy is improving lives through the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

We recently celebrated the generosity and vision of MUSC Legacy Society members with an evening at Cannon Green filled with conversation, fellowship and fine cuisine.

These donors have chosen to include the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in their estate or planned giving, and through their foresight, they are advancing health, discovery and innovation for generations to come. šŸ™Œ

šŸ’™ Did you know MUSC College of Medicine students provide free health services to hundreds each year?

At the student-run CARES Clinic, future physicians gain hands-on experience while expanding access to care for neighbors who might otherwise go without.

Each month, CARES volunteers also deliver fresh produce to hundreds of families in St. Stephen — part of their commitment to community health.

The clinic is made possible by donor support, grants and events like their annual BBQ fundraiser. Your generosity directly helps students learn and families get the care they deserve.

Incredible progress is being made in the fight against congenital heart defects (CHD). Seed funding from the Emerson Rose Heart Foundation helped launch early research on a heart valve that can grow with a child’s heart.

The Smith family started the foundation in memory of their daughter, Emerson Rose, who they lost to CHD in 2011. Dr. Minoo Kavarana, who cared for Emerson at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), is now leading the next phase of testing.

Emerson Rose’s life continues to inspire change and save others through her family’s philanthropy. Thank you, Smith family, for your generosity and for helping create real solutions for CHD patients and families. šŸ’™

When doctors diagnosed Sylvie Baele with leukemia, she turned to the same source that had helped her rebuild her life before: her bike.

Thanks to innovative care and cancer research at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, Sylvie’s disease is now managed — and she’s back in the saddle, leading Second Chance Bikes and riding in LOWVELO to fund the next generation of cures. 🚲 šŸ”¬āœØ

ā€œIf I had had ALL 10 years ago, I would 100% be dead right now,ā€ she says. ā€œIt’s because of cancer research that I am here.ā€ šŸ™Œ Link to Sylvie's story in comments.

Marti’s Wish for GI Cancer Fund was established at the MUSC Foundation in 2016 by Mr. Harry Parnell in memory of his late wife, Marti. This fund supports critical research, education and outreach for GI cancers, with special consideration given to research focusing on signet ring cell carcinoma and H. pylori bacteria.

Sadly, Marti passed away 10 years ago today, on October 15th, 2015. Her last wish to her friend, Sunita Patel, and husband, Harry, was to donate time and money to pursue the education of primary care physicians and cancer experts to recognize Signet Ring Cell Cancer.

Harry not only holds his own personal fundraisers, but he also makes annual contributions to the fund through his procurement of rare collectible whiskeys that are auctioned at Hollings’ yearly signature food and wine event, Gourmet and Grapes. He was even honored for his outstanding fundraising efforts and dedication to supporting cancer research in 2023 with the Gourmet and Grapes ā€œCourage in Cancerā€ award.

Most recently, he collaborated with Hollings’ administration to establish the Marti’s Wish Award, which presented two Hollings scientists $50,000 each for their research projects studying gastrointestinal cancers. Today especially, we celebrate the memory of Marti and all that her last wish and her husband Harry have done for Hollings and other patients. Thank you!

At the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), philanthropy gives researchers the freedom to ask ā€œwhat if?ā€ and the support to find out. A $15,000 gift to test a new Parkinson’s therapy led to a $3.5 million national research effort that’s changing what’s possible for patients in South Carolina and beyond. šŸ¤

Donations to MUSC research help Parkinson’s patients and fuel bold studies to improve care and understanding of the disease.
