Saundra exemplified a life of unselfish giving and was a prominent member of the community. She was involved with many organizations including the Red Hat Society and NAACP, and she volunteered for many years at the Kentucky Performing Arts, as well as Actor's Theater, winning volunteer of the year on multiple occasions. Saundra was a dedicated worker. She was employed with Colgate Palmolive Company in 1977, as a factory worker, then as a bookkeeper until her retirement in 1998.

Saundra loved the Lord and was a long time member of Second Baptist Church alongside her husband of 40 years, Reverend Donald Johnson, who preceded her in death. Saundra would also fellowship at numerous churches in the Charlestown and Jeffersonville area, always happy to be in the house of the Lord heading up the Easter or Christmas children’s programs.

Saundra enjoyed multiple hobbies, crocheting blankets, hats, dresses and socks for anyone who was expecting a baby. Cooking delicious meals for family and friends during the holidays brought her joy. Everyone was welcome, and Saundra's strawberry and carrot cake brought us happiness. Saundra certainly loved her extended family, and we loved her. Saundra loved going on vacations and cruises with her family and did so for many years. She also had a passion for reading and knew the scriptures well.

Donnie Ray’s career was deeply rooted in the community as he spent many years working diligently on the Gilbert Family farm. For that, the family thanks you.

Maria "Elana" Bussey

Maria “Elana” Bussey passed away peacefully with her family by her side on January 13, 2026. Elana was a woman whose life was defined by service, faith, and quiet perseverance, and she now rests in the peace of eternity with her Lord.

Elana was one of six siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles “Honey” Doyle and Lillian “Maw” Doyle, as well as her brother Charles Doyle. She is survived by her sisters Charlotte Morris, Jean Brafford, and Roxy Abbott, and by her brother, Thomas (Barbara) Doyle.

She was the beloved widow of George Lee Bussey Sr., to whom she was married from January 2, 1962, until his passing in August 2011. A lifelong connection to Charlestown, Elana attended Charlestown schools and later earned her GED in 1988. Though Charlestown was always home, she also lived in Florida during George’s military service, as well as in Jeffersonville and Lexington, Indiana, before returning to Charlestown. Together with George, she raised a family and shared her time and talents generously with all who knew her.

A woman of deep faith, Elana was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church, where her beliefs shaped how she lived and served others. Faith was not only something she practiced, it was the foundation of who she was. Her eyes were always fixed on the Lord and His guidance in every season of her life.

Elana carried herself with poise and purpose, her values rooted in integrity, kindness, and a quiet sense of responsibility. Throughout her life, she gave of herself in ways many could not. During challenging seasons, she was often the first to step in without hesitation, becoming a steady and loving presence when others needed it most. Her selflessness, care, and consistency shaped lives in lasting ways that will continue to be felt for years to come.

Elana retired from custodial services with River Valley Middle School in 1997. Cleaning was more than a job to her— it was something she took pride in. Whether in her own home or someone else’s space, every carpet fiber was vacuumed in the same direction, every floor mopped thoroughly, and every sink wiped until it shined.

Her no-bake cookies were legendary, one made with chocolate, others with just peanut butter. They became a cherished Christmas tradition, requested year after year by all who knew her. No one could ever quite recreate them the way she did, carefully testing the mixture the old-fashioned way: a spoonful into cold water, waiting for it to form a soft, moldable ball.

Elana enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and during her earlier years, weekly card nights, bowling leagues, karaoke, & line dancing were a beloved pastime. As her family grew, she became lovingly known as Mamaw to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, finding great joy in supporting others and sharing love and laughter. Throughout her life, one constant source of enjoyment was the casino— early-morning trips to the slot machines that often turned into late-night adventures were among her favorite ways to pass the time.

Elana is survived by her children: Dawn (Tony) Lewis of Sellersburg; Dana (James) Miller of Corydon; and George Lee “Buster” (Kelly) Bussey Jr. of Charlestown. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Carmen Moots, Tara (Matthew) Beckman, Amanda (Chris) VanHoose, McKinnah (Wesley) Bowling, Garrett (Amber) Bussey, Haley Bussey, Hannah (Nathan) Thomas, and Nick Bussey. She was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren and is survived by eleven great-grandchildren.

Even as her health declined while battling multiple cancers, Elana remained strong and determined, facing her journey with quiet dignity until the end.

Visitation will be on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Grayson Funeral Home, 893 High Street, Charlestown from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm with her funeral service beginning at 12:00 pm, Burial will follow in Charlestown Cemetery.

She will be remembered as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend— a woman who gave abundantly of her time, her resources, and her love. Even when the right words didn’t come easily, her actions spoke volumes. In the hearts of those who loved her, Elana’s memory will live on forever.

Memories of Elana and messages of support for the family can be shared at www.GraysonFuneralHome.com.

Janna Kay Tullis

Janna Kay Tullis, 76, passed away peacefully at her home on January 2, 2026. Born in Pendleton, Oregon, on October 17, 1949, she was the second of five children and lived a life marked by intellect, vision, compassion, and deep Christian faith.

Janna built a distinguished and nationally recognized career at AT&T, where she served as an executive specializing in marketing, customer care, and call center leadership. Beginning her professional journey with Pacific Northwest Bell while attending college, she quickly demonstrated natural aptitude and earned increasingly influential roles across the AT&T organization. She served as a marketing account executive, earned multiple performance awards, and later held regional, national, and international consulting posts.

She was recruited to Bell Laboratories as a Principal and technical consultant, where her work in operational process improvement, customer care strategy, and executive alignment helped shape how major industries approached service and leadership. Known for her clarity of thought and professional integrity, she mentored future leaders, served on the AT&T Speakers Bureau, founded and directed the Northwest Call Center Managers’ Summit, and lectured at Portland State University. Her ideas were widely respected and informed strategic planning across sectors, including telecommunications, healthcare, banking, manufacturing, and forest products.

She retired early, leaving a legacy defined not only by titles but by lasting improvement and the people she influenced. Her faith was central to her identity, as well as her generosity and her calling to help others. Janna supported ministries locally and abroad, including electronic outreach, humanitarian work for an orphanage in Malawi, and mentorship for young women facing domestic violence, addiction, and crisis.

Psalm 37:4–6 (ESV) was particularly meaningful to her: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.” That passage shaped her belief that faith, encouragement, and service could change the trajectory of a life.

While she achieved much professionally, her greatest joy was her family—especially her thirteen nieces and nephews and twenty-two great-nieces and great-nephews, who were truly her world. She was affectionately known as the “rent-a-kid-mom,” eagerly stepping in for birthdays, graduations, Disneyland trips, New York adventures, and countless ordinary moments. Janna was the glue that kept the family connected, the one who bridged generations, championed accomplishments, and nurtured relationships despite distance and time. She remained active through the end of her life—spending time with family, working at Dillard’s in Clarksville, Indiana, and always ensuring her family remained connected with her and with each other. Her creative traditions, surprises, and one-on-one connections leave memories that could fill a library, and her love for Jesus Christ will be remembered for generations to come.

She is survived by her three brothers and one sister: John Tullis Jr. (Deborah) of Portland, OR, David Tullis (Ann) of Bremerton, WA, Phillip Tullis of Charlestown, IN, and Liz Hobbs (Steve) of St. Helens, OR; along with her beloved thirteen nieces and nephews and twenty-two great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Lindsay Tullis Sr. and Ann Mae Tullis, and by her beloved niece, Alecia Tullis.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, January 12, 2026, in Charlestown, Indiana, where she will be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ministries or organizations that invest in the spiritual growth, education, and well-being of others—causes that defined Janna’s life and legacy.

Though deeply missed, her influence endures in the people she taught, mentored, inspired, and loved. Her life was a testament to faith in action, a sharp mind in the service of good, and a gentle heart guided by purpose.

As we move into a new year, we know this transition can feel especially heavy for those who are grieving. While the calendar turns and the world speaks of fresh beginnings, many families are stepping into a year their loved one will never share, and that can be incredibly hard.

Please know that it’s okay to feel reluctant, uncertain, or even overwhelmed during this time. Grief doesn’t follow a timeline, and there is no “right” way to enter a new year after loss.

Our hearts remain with you, just as they were when we first had the honor of serving your family. We are wishing peace for you and your family this new year.
