A lost scoop of Superman

A thousand years ago, or so, during my brief stint at art school (my time at MCAD was so short I’m not sure I am qualified to call my self a drop out) I had a wonderful teacher named Phoebe White. Phoebe taught writing. It was 1979, a time of pogo and slam dancing and sardonic conceptual art. With my faeries and dragons and optimism, I wasn’t quite a fit. And neither was Phoebe. One day, she tentatively asked me if I would stay after class so she could show me something. We walked together to the cement stairs at a back entrance to the school. The steps were arrayed with small bright jellybeans that had seen some of the weather of Minneapolis and their colors flowed and swirled and cascaded down the grungy cement in an impertinent display of defiance. “Is this art?” Phoebe asked. I answered with the audacity of an abandoned jellybean, “It is if it was intentional.”

I get emails saying I’m “divisive.”
That I’m hurting “Christian unity.”

But unity around what, exactly?

Because when Israel built a golden calf
and called it “god”...
they didn’t see it as rebellion.
They called it worship.
They threw a festival.
They celebrated.
They united.

So tell me—
were the ones who refused to bow being “divisive”?

Or were they being faithful?

Because unity without truth isn’t holy.
It’s idolatry dressed up as devotion.

God didn’t call you to blend in
with the religious crowd.

He called you to be light.

And light—by its very nature—
makes darkness uncomfortable.

It exposes. It reveals.
It refuses to pretend.

Jesus never blended into
religious or political power.

He confronted the darkness
behind robes and crowns—
the cruelty, the control, the self-protection—
and He called it what it was:
whitewashed tombs.

So no—I won’t unite around counterfeit Christianity or bow to golden calves of power and politics just to keep the peace.

As for unity?

I’ll unite with anyone chasing the real Jesus—the One who loves God and loves people so fiercely that darkness can’t survive it.

Just Jesus.
Just His light.
Whatever it costs.

Because if being light in the darkness
has never cost us anything,
it might be worth asking ourselves
who—or what—we’re actually shining for.

Let's go make darkness uncomfortable today.

Watching the official half time show and then its rival, there's no comparison. One was about whining, power and the supremacy of the privileged, while the other celebrated diversity, joy, and love. You could FEEL it! It lingers. I know where I'd rather be, so that's where I am.
