One of the questions I hear most often is “Doc, what can I take to help with x, y or z?”
And my most common response is “It might not be about what you can take, but what can you take away”
Good health is a consequence of doing less “bad” things and doing more “good” things. Just as poor health is a consequence of having more “bad” things outweigh the “good”
In my mind, it does not make much sense to add in a supplement or a medication to the equation, if you’re not also going to stop the behaviors that are causing the problem to begin with. This is the foundation of functional or holistic medicine.
Supplements do serve a purpose and there should be some intentionality behind their use. But they are not going to “fix” an unhealthy lifestyle. There is a popular notion in the nutrition and body positivity world right now that says “there are no BAD foods” and to stop making judgements on good or bad.
I must say that I whole heartedly disagree. We have science and evidence to support the claim that some foods will damage your gut lining, your metabolism, your mitochondria and overall promote sickness and chronic diseases. I would call these BAD foods. More accurately I wouldn’t call them FOOD at all. I call them poisons.
Everything you bring into your personal orbit should have some intentionality behind it. Good people, good music, good food, great s*x and a calm mind. That’s how you create conditions where health is just a consequence of doing more good and less bad.
