Writing notes are one of the most intimidating parts of being a new therapist. There’s often so much content that happens in sessions that therapists overthink about what to document. Many often over document, which can be time consuming and possibly harmful to the client in the future.

In this week’s episode of The Keys to Therapy, I share the top 5 things that need to be a part of every clinical progress note. I discuss why each one is essential and provide a few tips on how to document them efficiently.

Today’s guest is Jessie Regan LMFT. Her is her bio: “I'm a licensed therapist with more than 15 years of experience and the founder of Embrace Therapy & Marriage Counseling in Sacramento, CA. My career has taken me through many different settings, but what's always guided my work is helping people find meaning and healing in their relationships and within themselves. My specialty in infidelity emerged organically from my work with couples in private practice and I've become deeply invested in supporting them through these difficult experiences. Working with couples navigating infidelity is complex and emotionally demanding, but it’s also where I see some of the most transformative healing and growth.”

In today’s episode, Jessie shares how she became a therapist and why she chose the MFT path after initially planning on becoming a PsyD. She discusses how her work with couples led to her specializing in infidelity and provides tips to therapists who want to pursue this path. Jessie also explains her 3 step process for helping couples heal and repair after experiencing a rupture, providing more insight into her therapeutic process.

Most people think that the bulk of mental health work happens in therapy sessions. However, the majority of the work happens between sessions! We only see clients for an hour a week, if that, and if clients aren’t working on themselves between sessions, then they aren’t getting the full benefits of therapy.

In this week’s episode of The Keys to Therapy, I discuss how to approach the topic of therapy homework with clients. I share the different types of homework you can assign clients (from easy to in depth) and give examples of each. I also explain how you can use therapeutic homework to propel sessions forward.

Being a mandated reporter is one of the most intimidating aspects of being a therapist. Some things are very obviously reportable, but others are a bit more difficult to discern. New therapists especially can be nervous about being a mandated reporter and what that means for their relationships with their clients.

In this week’s episode of The Keys to Therapy, I discuss what it means to be a mandated reporter. I share examples of things that are reportable and identify some of the gray areas that can cause confusion about the process. I also provide tips on how to report and how to share that you are making a report with clients.

It can be difficult to work with a client and have them disappear from therapy. Maybe the cancelled and never rescheduled or no-showed and didn’t reach out. Or took an extended break with no return date. This can trigger a therapist’s imposter syndrome and can impact your schedule.

In this week’s episode of The Keys to Therapy, I discuss possible reasons why clients can disappear from therapy. I share how therapists can directly address this with clients to re-engage clients, gain closure, and decrease liability.

Most therapists are taught in school to be a blank slate. We’re expected to be a neutral as possible so clients can come in without any direct influence that is not therapy related. I completely disagree with this approach!

In this week’s episode, I discuss how therapists can never fully be a blank slate since so much of who we are is immediately visible in how we look, what we wear, and how we speak. I share how what clients are looking for in therapists contradicts the blank slate method and how therapists can work to create boundaries so they are able to share who they are without crossing boundaries in the therapeutic relationship.

In this week’s episode, I discuss the different ways of prepping for sessions that you can do with different types of clients and modalities. I share my views on over prepping and give tips on ways to keep the sessions moving without forcing a conversation.

Releasing emotions is a major part of the therapeutic process. It can be difficult for therapists to know how to handle a client who is crying. There have been debates in the therapy community about offering tissues (yes, really) and discourse over hugging clients, staying silent, and how to end the session when a client is actively crying.

In this week’s episode, I share my views on the issues mentioned above. I share ways to end your sessions on time when a client is upset to meet their needs and stick with your own time boundaries.
