Black History Month: Black medical schools were created because Black students were excluded from most medical training.

In the early 1900s, there were 7 Black medical schools. After the Flexner-era reforms, funding and institutional support flowed overwhelmingly to white schools, and most Black schools were denied the resources needed to meet the new standards.

Result: 5 of the 7 Black medical schools closed, leaving only Howard and Meharry.

Schools that closed included:
• Leonard Medical School (Shaw University)
• Flint Medical College (New Orleans University)
• Knoxville Medical College
• Louisville National Medical College
• West Tennessee College of Medicine and Surgery

This history still shapes today’s healthcare workforce and why advocacy for respectful, equitable maternity care matters.

For generations, Black midwives were trusted community healers, educators, and advocates, often serving families when respectful care was not guaranteed.

Their work helped shape modern maternity care, and their legacy still lives in todays doulas, midwives, and birth workers who protect informed consent, dignity, and safe birth.
