Often we don't think of the consequences of applying ideas to what we think should and shouldn't be. We could shame borrowers for education they "can't afford," but the risk that they take benefits us all. Most Doctors, Nurses, Teachers, Social Workers, and other counseling fields and medical specialties require student loans fund their education.
The average student loan debt for a masters in social work is $68,000-$76,000. The average for a Black clinician is $92,000. The average salary for a new professional is $47,000
Most social workers will not qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness and 98% of the people who applied for PSLF were denied as of 2021. Applicants who qualify for PSLF are more likely to be in lower income position and the past administration broke trust with their promise to reimburse them for their service. Steps are being made to correct this breach of trust but this only coverage a small percentage of health care workers.
