September 17 – Mindful Minute
Today, take a minute (or more) and ask yourself, “Am I taking things personally?” That may be one of the greatest misconceptions of our social existence. Somehow, many of us insistently believe that “everything” is about us. In one of my favorite books, “The Four Agreements,” author Don Miguel Ruiz says, “Don’t take anything personally. Nothing other people do is because of you. All people live in their own dream, in their own mind. They are in a completely different world than we are in.” Yet, we often go through our days believing other people are thinking about what we are doing and perhaps judging us for it. When in fact, most people are so wrapped up in their own world, that they are usually oblivious to anyone else’s life. This fictional belief may even lead us to make decisions for ourselves based on what we perceive is acceptable to others. It’s imperative that we come to the realization taking things personally is not only destructive to ourselves but also those we are accusing of hurting us. Just addressing this one thing can be life-changing for many of us.
