NC MedAssist

NC MedAssist NC MedAssist is a statewide nonprofit pharmacy providing prescription medicine to uninsured, low-income residents at no cost. FOOD OR MEDICINE??

Through our Free Pharmacy Program, OTC Free Store, and Mobile Free Pharmacy events, we are dispensing hope across NC. That is the stark choice that faces more and more members of our own community. As costs of prescription drugs continue to rise and the numbers of uninsured reach all time highs, providing a no cost source for life-saving prescription drugs becomes critical. NC MedAssist exists to provide free medications to the uninsured by qualifying patients for patient assistance programs offered by pharmaceutical companies and dispensing them directly to patients. Over the past 12 years, NC MedAssist has dispensed over $30 million in free prescription medicines to over 15,000 low-income residents. In Mecklenburg County, NC MedAssist serves as a Community Pharmacy dispensing free prescription medication to our neighbors who are uninsured. Residents of the county can qualify for our services if they are at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. At our two locations in Charlotte, we do not have doctors on staff so you must have a prescription slip written by a doctor to apply. If you believe that you may be eligible for help with your prescription medication, please call us at 704-536-1790. We can screen you on the phone to let you know how we may be able to assist you. We also serve as the Central Fill Pharmacy for North Carolina's Free Clinics. Patients access our services through the physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners that serve these clinics across the state.

For more than a decade, The Leon Levine Foundation has been a trusted partner in our work to improve medication access statewide.

We are immensely thankful and honored to receive a three-year grant, totaling $525,000 in support of our mission to dispense hope across North Carolina. This generous gift helps reinforce a shared commitment to making a lasting impact on health outcomes for our most vulnerable neighbors by strengthening our ability to provide life-saving medications across North Carolina.

Due to inclement weather and in alignment with the Mecklenburg County emergency schedule, the NC MedAssist pharmacy and administrative offices will be closed tomorrow.

We are also closely monitoring weather conditions that may impact medication shipments early next week. Some medications — including insulin and GLP-1 therapies — must remain within a specific temperature range during delivery. If weather conditions affect shipping routes or delivery timelines, we may delay shipping these medications to ensure they arrive safely and remain effective.

Our team is working with delivery partners to make the best decisions for patient safety. We will continue to share updates if weather conditions result in additional closures or shipping delays. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

As the year comes to a close, your generosity can still make a life-saving difference.

When Jason R. came to NC MedAssist, he was uninsured and struggling with severe depression, anxiety, diabetes, and hypertension. Without access to his medications, his health had reached a critical point.

“I was very near death,” Jason shared.

Through a local clinic, Jason connected with NC MedAssist and began receiving the medications he needed. With consistent access to care, he started rebuilding his health—step by step.

Stories like Jason’s are possible because of compassionate donors who believe access to medication shouldn’t depend on income or insurance status.

December 31 is the final day to make a 2025 tax-deductible donation. Your year-end gift helps ensure more neighbors across North Carolina receive the life-saving medications they need.
