NC MedAssist

NC MedAssist NC MedAssist is a statewide nonprofit pharmacy providing prescription medicine to uninsured, low-income residents at no cost. FOOD OR MEDICINE??

Through our Free Pharmacy Program, OTC Free Store, and Mobile Free Pharmacy events, we are dispensing hope across NC. That is the stark choice that faces more and more members of our own community. As costs of prescription drugs continue to rise and the numbers of uninsured reach all time highs, providing a no cost source for life-saving prescription drugs becomes critical. NC MedAssist exists to provide free medications to the uninsured by qualifying patients for patient assistance programs offered by pharmaceutical companies and dispensing them directly to patients. Over the past 12 years, NC MedAssist has dispensed over $30 million in free prescription medicines to over 15,000 low-income residents. In Mecklenburg County, NC MedAssist serves as a Community Pharmacy dispensing free prescription medication to our neighbors who are uninsured. Residents of the county can qualify for our services if they are at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. At our two locations in Charlotte, we do not have doctors on staff so you must have a prescription slip written by a doctor to apply. If you believe that you may be eligible for help with your prescription medication, please call us at 704-536-1790. We can screen you on the phone to let you know how we may be able to assist you. We also serve as the Central Fill Pharmacy for North Carolina's Free Clinics. Patients access our services through the physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners that serve these clinics across the state.

NC MedAssist will be closed on November 27 & 28 in observance of Thanksgiving. We will reopen on Monday, December 1.

Did you know North Carolina has the second largest rural population in the US?

Rural communities face some of the biggest barriers to medication access — long drives, limited pharmacy options, and fewer local resources.

On National Rural Health Day, we’re honoring our rural neighbors by continuing to meet them where they are.

Last year:
• 22% of our Free Pharmacy patients came from rural counties
• We dispensed 21,000+ prescriptions to them ($7.6M in value)
• Half of our Mobile Free Pharmacy events served rural communities

While we’ve made progress, many rural residents still face obstacles to getting the medications they need. Together, we can keep working to ensure no one has to go without their medication simply because of where they live.

Today is World Diabetes Day, a reminder of the importance of awareness, prevention, and access to the medications people need to manage their blood sugar.

Last year, NC MedAssist helped 3,577 uninsured, low-income Free Pharmacy patients fill 22,038 prescriptions to manage diabetes.

Every prescription we provide represents someone facing barriers to medication access who can receive the medication they need — someone who can now focus on living their life without worrying if they'll be able to afford their medicine.

Our programs are only possible through the generosity of sponsors, donors, and volunteers. Learn more about how you can support our mission to expand access to life-saving medication at www.medassist.org
