✨ Doctor Spotlight: Dr. Emily Howard ✨

Meet Dr. Emily Howard of Carolinas Vision Group – Ballantyne! 👩‍⚕️💚

Dr. Howard’s passion for optometry was shaped by her own firsthand experience with visual needs and ocular disease in her family and friends. That compassion drives the personalized care she brings to every patient she sees. 👓

Originally from Columbia, SC, she earned her undergraduate degree from UNC Chapel Hill and completed her Doctor of Optometry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During her training, she gained expertise in myopia control, vision therapy, specialty contacts, and more. 👁️

When she’s not in the office, Dr. Howard loves cheering on her favorite teams (go Tar Heels & Gamecocks!), working out, traveling, and spending time with family.

We’re lucky to have her on our team! 💙

👁️ Let’s Talk About Myopia Prevention 👓

Myopia (nearsightedness) is on the rise—especially in children. The good news? Early action can slow its progression and protect long-term eye health.

💡 Tips for Preventing or Slowing Myopia:
🟢 Spend more time outdoors (at least 2 hours/day)
🟢 Take regular screen breaks (follow the 20-20-20 rule, where every 20 minutes, you look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds)
🟢 Encourage good lighting when reading or using devices
🟢 Schedule annual comprehensive eye exams
🟢 Utilize lenses that have been proven to slow myopia progression, like Stellest lenses!

Early detection = better outcomes.

📅 Book your child’s eye exam today and take the first step in protecting their vision for life.

What is Retinal Imaging? Let’s break it down 👉

1️⃣ Retinal imaging captures a high-res image of the back of your eye—helping detect early signs of disease and overall health issues.

2️⃣ Your retina is the only place in the body where blood vessels and nerves can be seen non-invasively—making it a window into your overall health.

3️⃣ It can help detect:
✔ Diabetic retinopathy
✔ Macular degeneration
✔ Glaucoma
✔ Hypertension
✔ And much more

4️⃣ It’s quick, easy, and comfortable—no drops or discomfort needed!

5️⃣ Most eye diseases show no early symptoms. Retinal imaging helps us catch problems before vision is affected.

📅 Ask about retinal imaging at your next exam—it’s one of the easiest ways to protect your sight and your health, or learn more at https://youtu.be/k1ROV1owkxM.

💻 Myth Busted: Using computers won’t damage your eyes — but staring too long without breaks can lead to digital eye strain or dry eyes.

👁️ Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
💧 Blink often & use artificial tears to keep your eyes comfortable and hydrated.

Take care of your screen time—your eyes will thank you! 🙌

Our Story

Dr. Charles "Chuck" Knudson graduated from Southern College of Optometry in 1991. He became a partner/owner of the Optometry Group in Memphis, TN and practiced there for 7 years. In 1998, he became President & CEO of Vision Care Specialists, Inc in Denver, CO, with 14 doctors and multiple locations. In 2006, Dr. Knudson and his family moved to Charlotte and joined EyeOptix Vision and Laser Centers. In December, 2007, Dr. Knudson helped EyeOptix open their Ballantyne and Uptown offices and has been seeing patients there to the present. In 2011, Dr. Knudson offered to buy the Ballantyne location from EyeOptix so that he could provide more focus and care for the patients he had come to know in Ballantyne and the surrounding areas. August 2011 brought that exciting possibility to a reality. Dr. Knudson is the North Carolina State Executive for a practice improvement group called OD Excellence. As the practice continued to grow, he brought on Dr. Kimberly (Mark) Douglas as a full-time associate in April of 2013. She is a 2005 graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill and 2009 graduate from UMSL College of Optometry. She has been a great asset to our practice. As Carolinas Vision Group has grown even more, an additional Doctor was added to the practice in the summer of 2017. Dr. Steven Kotsokalis is a residency-trained optometrist born and raised in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Kotsokalis graduated from North Carolina State University in 2012 and Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 2016. It has been an honor having him join our team. Our last big change came in November of 2017, as we opened our second office location. Now, open in Rea Farms we are able to service even more patients! We are so exited to see where this journey continues to lead us, and were thrilled to have you be a part of it.
