Teen Health Connection's team and board recently held a Food Drive for our neighbors in need. Collectively, we donated 173 pounds of food to Nourish Up. With more than 200,000 people in Mecklenburg County, including hardworking families, children, veterans, and seniors, facing food insecurity, Nourish Up works to lift neighbors up by providing choices in groceries and meals that are nourishing and delicious. Special thanks to Tim Smith, behavioral health triage clinician at Teen Health Connection, for coordinating the drive.

According to data from Mecklenburg County Housing, there is a significant number of youth who are unstably housed in Mecklenburg County. Many of these youth have challenges such as disabilities, domestic violence experiences, and limited access to resources. Without early and coordinated interventions, at-risk youth are likely to become literally homeless, which increases their risk for future negative outcomes related to health, education, and housing stability. Here at Teen Health Connection, we work holistically with our behavioral health team to prepare teens for life’s challenges. Contact our Teen Health Connection Triage Team at TeenHealthConnection@TeenHealthConnection.org or call (704) 381-8336.

Each year, Teen Health Connection awards its highly competitive, Johnston Ziegler Safrit Youth Leadership Scholarship to a student who exemplifies leadership, advocacy, and service.

Jewel Wood, our 2023 scholarship winner from Hopewell High School, is now a junior at Howard University in Washington, DC. She shares how the scholarship helped ease her transition to college where she is studying Health Science and Human Development.

Q: How has the scholarship helped you with your education and following graduation?

A: The Johnston Ziegler Safrit scholarship significantly helped ease the financial burden of my freshman year at Howard University. That year was a big adjustment, financially for my parents and mentally for me. With unexpected costs and unpredictability of circumstances during my first year, this scholarship helped put things at ease. It allowed me to fully focus on my studies, and reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career in healthcare and serving youth.

Q: What are you doing now?

A: I am currently in my third year of undergraduate studies at Howard University, majoring in Health Science and minoring in Human Development. After graduation, I plan to pursue further education to become a pediatric occupational therapist.

Q: What advice would you have for anyone considering applying for the scholarship?

A: My advice for anyone applying for this scholarship is to be authentic and be confident. Don't compare yourself to other applicants, who you may think did something more meaningful or significant in service than you. Whatever you've done and whatever you're passionate about, share it! It is unique to you as an individual, and Teen Health Connection values that! Don't doubt yourself when applying, and simply do your best!

Q: Anything you would like to say about Teen Health Connection and how important our services are to teens?

A: Teen Health Connection plays a vital role in the Charlotte youth community, particularly in supporting teens' physical and behavioral health. This organization has cultivated a safe space for young people to learn, grow, be cared for, and feel empowered for success in their future. To see how this organization has grown through various programs and volunteer opportunities amazes me. They are doing great work in the community, which is especially crucial to the rising generation. I'm extremely grateful for the support they've provided, not just financially through scholarships, but through their commitment to helping teens become healthy, confident adults.

It’s “Where’s Pixie?” Day! Today, Pixie is watching one of Teen Health Connection’s "The Big Picture" video vignettes in our lobby. This episode warns teens on how to spot 'red flags' in relationships.

Started in 2012 as a data-driven conversation starter among adults and teens, "The Big Picture" has become a reality check for the Charlotte community. The productions bring to life public health data from the perspective and experiences of local high school students who write and create the short video vignettes. Some of the topics featured in the videos include anxiety, depression, self-harm, healthy relationships, substance abuse, body image, and more.

Check out some of the videos on our website at TeenHealthConnection.org. Select Program - The Big Picture.

This week’s Pixie tip – I just love grabbing a blanket, a good snack, and watching these videos. "The Big Picture" vignettes really capture some of the issues our teens are facing. I give them a 5 out of 5 tail wag.

Thursday, November 13 was National Philanthropy Day, and Teen Health Connection enjoyed a tremendous celebration hosted by the Charlotte Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). The luncheon, "Capes to Causes: Honoring Charlotte's Heroes," highlighted some amazing philanthropists in the Charlotte area. Shout out to all the award winners and the non-profits doing great work in our Queen city.

As the holiday season approaches and the cold weather settles in, so does the occurrence of seasonal affective disorder, also known as "seasonal depression" or the "winter blues."

This is just one of the services that our behavioral health team can assist with. Here's what our very own Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and Manager of Behavioral Health Services Betsy Thompson recently shared with Q City Metro newspaper about this issue and what families should know.

If you, or someone you know is experiencing signs of depression, or if you would like more information about behavioral health services, please call 704-381-TEEN (8336) or visit our website and click the Patients and Behavioral Health tabs.
