Farmer Foodshare at Atherton Market

Farmer Foodshare at Atherton Market We make the connection between local farmers and neighbors in need, by donating locally-grown food to nonprofits supporting the food insecure.

In 2015, Farmer Foodshare at Atherton Market gathered over 2,700 pounds of locally-grown food for Friendship Trays and St. Mark's Soup Kitchen. The focus on local food provides better nutrition for their clients, as well as supporting our area's food network. We accept donations from market customers, either as cash or as food purchased at the Market. Cash donations are pooled to buy food from at the Market vendors to donate to our recipient organizations. We also receive generous donations of excess food directly from our farmers, turning potential waste into community support.

We are in need of volunteers to continue serving our recipients at Atherton on Saturdays. With our current small number of volunteers, it is difficult and sometimes impossible to cover market hours from 9-2. If you're willing and able to man the booth for an hour or two, especially after 11, please email athertonfoodshare@gmail.com.

Tickets for our autumn fundraiser are live! Join us for a Thanksgiving meal prepared by Clark Barlowe in one of Historic Brattonsville's original open hearth kitchens. All proceeds will benefit our neighbors at St. Mark's Soup Kitchen, Friendship Trays, Inc., and A Better World Charlotte. Due to the nature of this event, seating is limited, so don't miss out!

Mark your calendars now! A limited number of tickets for our autumn fundraiser will go on sale next month. Step back in time with us to celebrate historic foodways and local ingredients, prepared and served at one of Historic Brattonsville's original homesteads. Clark Barlowe of Heirloom bravely and generously agreed to use the site's 18th century hearth kitchen, and we can't wait to see what he does.

Back to School time! We are thrilled to announce that as CMS students return to school this week, we are adding A Better World Charlotte to our rotation of recipients. A Better World is a non-profit organization serving at-risk youth in the Ashley Park and Westchester communities, and provides a safe after-school space with homework assistance, tutoring, mentoring, and a hot meal 5 days a week.

Over 15 million school-age children in the US experience food insecurity, which directly impacts school readiness; we can fight this statistic in our community! Please help us stock A Better World's kitchen with healthy local food this Saturday at Atherton Mill and Market.
