Joseph White is one of the first to earn a Clinical Psychology degree from Michigan University in 1962. Joseph is considered a "Godfather of Black psychology," and wrote articles enlightening readers on how African Americans were viewed negatively in the field. In 1970, Joseph's article, “Towards a Black Psychology” was published in Ebony Magazine and altered the perception of black psychology. Joseph's research and writings on the urban topic formed a new audience and created a new generation of psychology.

Francis Sumner, PhD, is referred to as the "Father of Black Psychology" because he was the first African American to receive a PhD in psychology.
