With fascination, I watch how people’s birthdays can bring up grieving.
🗓️
I listen to 20- and 30- year olds - » how aging-related grief can be even stronger when one is younger. I hear people say what they wish they’d accomplished already - and they are only in their 20’s, 30’s, and even 40’s.
🗓️
Never do I want to minimize someone’s feelings > and I also laugh inside. They have so many years ahead!

Then, I think of myself…

Mona Lisa Marie Simpson >

formerly known as Lisa >

is traumatized, wants to be small, sits in the corner with her face hidden, pants a lot, just ate for the first time in almost 2 days, and is grieving and confused.

She came from a rescue where over 2 dozen dogs were taken in dangerous, freezing weather. She safe, but also likely missing her other dog friends. She’s never been inside a house 😢

So proud of beloved Pema for helping her regulate. 💞

In honor of 2/14/26 a most beautiful poem written by my brilliant and loving-hearted poet neighbor ❤️‍🔥🖊️ who created this to honor the opening of our neighborhood

Widening
By Sara Kay Mooney
In memory of Jane

Across the street
from my house
is a box made from trees,
which is to say it is
a wooden box that sits
atop a sturdy wooden pole,
once shade,
once squirrel home
once branch and bark.

Inside this box—
this generous box,
this patient box,
this bright box of yes
and welcome—
are worlds made of words:
entire lives folded into
spine and ink,
offspring of other trees
still giving from
their great abundance,
saying: come, take, please.

These worlds change
because my neighbors
change them:
leave and take,
share and borrow,
friends and strangers,
our lives connecting,
intertwining in ways that are
impossible to map.

It costs nothing to visit
these worlds in this box,
which is another way
of saying free
which is another way
of saying freedom
which is another way
of saying, come closer—
yes you, and you too—
come, take, come feast on
these worlds
these words
this forest of stories
inside this box

They will give and give
and give
if only we let them
if only we arrive
with hearts open,
hands and minds ready
to receive
what the word
may have for us:
gift after gift after
generous and surprising
gift, this exuberant exchange,
this ageless invitation
to know
to grow
to understand
and then, in turn,
to give.

The contents of the box
are always changing,
not unlike our own hearts,
which—bless them—
are always learning

how to open wider

It’s fitting that the day before Valentine’s Day is Madly in Love with Me Day! This is a most special day in the world of Wanda Petunia and a timely reminder that loving yourself is the foundation of loving others.

For those of us who may not have been loved well during childhood, it is truly healing to have others who love us at some point. We learn to love through relationship - with family, friends, romantic partners, pets, trees, and chocolate 😂!

Loved creativity time today with in her Patreon gathering of friends!

I’ve been learning about the healing power of from another training I’m in with
💨
So today, my character was able to move from a struggle to breathe at all into a big inhale and sigh!
💨
Here’s her tiny story:
🐭

“She couldn’t breathe but found a little opening…

As the weight of the world was heavy on her mouse shoulders…

She found a tiny inhale between the grass and clouds, exhale…

Deep sigh!

A lot of stress can make it hard to breathe. You can start small with just a little inhale and a longer exhale and build up!

Hiking the Trail of Inner Peace…
🥾
The Boone Fork Trail at Julian Price Park… the Pinnacle Trail at Crowders Mountain State Park… the Overlook Rock Trail at Kanawha Forest… the Split Rock Trail at Latta Nature Preserve… the Beaverpond Trail at Hard Labor Creek State Park… some of my favorite places to hike.
🥾
They each have their own terrain - and often I must navigate rocks, roots, and loose soil to stay safely on the path…

I don’t worry about how good I draw… and spend time listening to the music and drawing each person’s face that we are blessed to see!
I even dream as I draw > of the day when people are not judged by their skin color, sexual orientation, religious preferences, gender or…

I may be dreaming about this for a while before it happens! 😢

Therapy did not emerge outside of power. It was built inside it.

Modern mental health didn't grow from a neutral desire to help people feel better.

It took shape alongside colonization, capitalism, eugenics, and social control — shaped by the same systems that decided whose lives were valuable, whose pain was believable, and whose bodies needed correction or containment.

That history still lives here.

When therapy is treated as neutral, objective, or apolitical, something important gets erased: mental health systems didn't just respond to suffering, they helped organize it.

They taught us to pathologize survival responses, individualize what is actually structural, diagnose distress instead of naming violence, and reward compliance over context.

This is why so many people enter therapy already braced.

And it's why so many practitioners feel a quiet dissonance too.

The sense of helping within a system that keeps producing harm faster than it can be addressed. You cannot practice care inside an extractive system without paying a cost.

Mental health, as it's been structured, often asks people to adapt to conditions that are fundamentally violent — racism, displacement, poverty, surveillance, carcerality — without naming those conditions as the source of distress.

When therapy avoids historical and present day problems, it quietly teaches that the problem lives inside the person rather than in the world that shaped them.

That's not accidental. It protects institutions from accountability while asking individuals to carry the weight.

To say therapy was built inside colonization isn't to reject care. It's to refuse the lie that healing can be separated from power.

Care that doesn't name context asks people to heal in isolation. Care that does name it opens the door to something else: dignity, truth, and shared responsibility.
