National Optometric Association

National Optometric Association To Advance the Visual Health of Under-supported Populations.

"Committed to insure comprehensive eye and vision health care, decreasing the health disparity in minority communities as it promotes diversity in vision care providers". Founded in 1969 and comprised primarily of minority optometrists, the National Optometric Association’s mission of “Advancing the Visual Health of Minority Populations” is accomplished by emphasizing ways to enhance the delivery; effectiveness and efficiency of eye and vision care services in minority communities. In efforts to promote greater cultural diversity, the recruitment and retention of minority students into the schools and colleges of optometry and their placement into appropriate practice settings upon graduation are two priorities of the NOA. Recent NOA efforts have focused on the Association's desire to better educate those populations who are at higher risk of developing sight-threatening conditions like glaucoma and diabetic eye disease -- specifically urban, rural and minority populations with poor access to eye health care -- about the importance of early detection and timely treatment. NOA Region II was excited to join the thoughtful student Q&A at Illinois College of Optometry NOSA on January 23rd and the Kentucky NOSA chapter on February 11th.

Students asked honest questions about staying motivated, choosing a practice path, advancing health equity, and navigating the profession as future doctors.

Thank you to our inspiring panelists Dr. Reneta Simeon, Dr. Araba Otoo, and Dr. Karina Fulton for sharing real talk on motivation, career paths, health equity, and life after graduation.

The progress we celebrate this month was made possible by bold leaders who believed in access, equity, and representation in optometry. Honoring Black history means continuing the work through service, mentorship, and giving back.
