In episode 8 of Inside Out Podcast, Michael talks about Internal Family Systems (IFS). I have also talked about our child self, adult self. IFS is a way that we can organize and better understand our inner worlds. We grow up in a family “system” with equations of how to get needs met, unspoken or spoken rules to follow, roles to play and our attachment (way of relating) is formed. Once we are adults, those rules, beliefs, equations, and attachment is now internalized. This means, what was concrete people and outside of you, is now abstract and inside of you. IFS helps us acknowledge the many different parts of us, views each part as valid and worthy and motivated by certain fears or insecurities. The Self (adult self) is then the leader of all these parts of us, hearing each out, and determining the best move forward.
There are 3 categories of parts:
MANAGERS keep us functioning daily and keep emotions from impacting that functioning.
FIREFIGHTERS come in when feelings are triggered and threaten overwhelming us (cutting, addictions, eating disorders).
EXILES bear the individual’s pain and shame, often a reflection of early childhood experiences.
