Governor Stein’s Executive Order No. 33 recognizes what families in Mecklenburg County already know: our behavioral health system is stretched, and access to care must improve.

North Carolina ranks 38th in access to mental health care. More than 1 in 5 adults experienced mental illness last year. Nearly every county faces provider shortages. These are not just statistics. They are the families who call our Navigator line and walk into our Resource Center asking where to begin.

We are encouraged by the Executive Order’s focus on strengthening the behavioral health workforce, improving crisis coordination between 911 and 988, supporting youth mental health, and expanding reentry services.

At NAMI Charlotte, we ensure families can navigate these systems. Through our free, bilingual NAMI Navigator and peer-led programs, we help individuals connect to care with clarity and dignity.

Policy creates opportunity. Community navigation creates access.
