When Should Rolling Happen—And How Do We Help It Along? 🔄👶

Rolling is one of the first big milestones in your baby’s motor development—and it lays the foundation for so many others.

💡 So, when does rolling typically begin?
Babies usually start rolling from tummy to back around 3–5 months, and from back to tummy between 5–6 months. But remember: every baby develops at their own pace!

If your baby isn’t showing interest in rolling yet, don’t stress—there are gentle ways to help:

✔️ Tummy time: Short, frequent sessions build the strength needed for rolling
✔️ Side-lying play: Great for practicing weight shifting
✔️ Use toys or your voice to encourage looking and reaching across midline
✔️ Minimize container time (like swings or bouncers) to allow for more free movement

At Carolina Kinder Development, we help babies reach milestones like rolling with confidence—and guide parents with strategies you can use at home.

💙 Unsure if your baby is on track? We’re always here to take a look and support you wherever you are in the journey.

What Is Myofunctional Therapy (and Who Needs It?) 👅💬

Myofunctional therapy is a specialized type of therapy that focuses on how the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue work together for breathing, swallowing, and speaking. Think of it as physical therapy—but for your mouth!

At Carolina Kinder Development, we use myofunctional therapy to help children who struggle with:

👃 Mouth breathing or open-mouth posture
😴 Snoring or restless sleep
🍽️ Tongue thrust or messy eating
💦 Excessive drooling that continues beyond teething
🗣️ Difficulty making certain speech sounds
👄 Poor tongue posture or low muscle tone
💡 Many families come to us concerned about ongoing drooling or open-mouth posture—especially when it affects eating, speaking, or comfort.

These signs can signal an underlying muscle pattern that myofunctional therapy can gently help correct.

Through fun, targeted exercises and therapist-led care, we help retrain the oral and facial muscles to function the way they’re meant to—supporting clearer speech, stronger feeding, and healthier habits long-term.

💬 Wondering if your child might benefit? We’re happy to take a look.

👣 Shoe Tips for Babies + Toddlers
Choosing your baby’s first pair of shoes? We’ve got you covered.

Here’s what we recommend at Carolina Kinder Development to support healthy foot and motor development:

1️⃣ Barefoot is best (when safe!)
Bare feet = better balance, coordination, and sensory feedback.

2️⃣ Flexible + lightweight
Shoes should bend easily and allow natural foot movement. Look for a “semi-flexible sole” and avoid converse-like soles.

3️⃣ No built-in arch support needed
Flat feet are developmentally normal in little ones.

4️⃣ Considering high top shoes?
These can be good options for our babies who have flatter feet and sometimes this can help with delayed walkers. Ask your PT more info!

Then lets take out the bend in half part (those actually aren’t my favorite)

5️⃣ Snug, but not tight
A secure heel + room to wiggle those toes is key!

💡 Pro Tip: If you can fold and twist the shoe easily in your hands, it's likely a good pick.

Still unsure? Bring the shoes to your next session—our therapists are always happy to help.

Why Does My Baby Always Look One Way? 🤔🧠

If your baby consistently turns their head to one side, leans their body in one direction, or seems to favor one arm or leg—it’s likely not just a quirk. These are called neck or trunk preferences, and they often stem from early patterns in how your baby moves and experiences their environment.

Here’s what can contribute to those preferences:

🔹 In-womb positioning — Babies can develop tightness or asymmetry before they’re even born
🔹 Birth experience — Long labors, c-sections, or delivery complications may play a role
🔹 Muscle tightness or weakness — Often in the neck (torticollis) or core
🔹 Container use — Too much time in car seats, bouncers, or swings can reinforce limited movement
🔹 Delayed or limited tummy time — Which can affect strength and head control

These preferences can impact head shape, motor development, and how babies move through milestones like rolling, sitting, and crawling.

💡 The good news? With early therapy and intentional movement strategies, babies can build strength, balance, and symmetrical movement patterns that support healthy development.

If you're noticing one-sided patterns, trust your instincts. Early support can make a big difference—and we’re here to help. 💙

What Does Early Intervention Actually Mean? 🧠💙

You hear the phrase a lot as a parent… but what does early intervention really look like?

At Carolina Kinder Development, it means catching small concerns before they become big challenges.
It means noticing the way your baby moves, looks, or prefers one side—and knowing what to do next.
It means giving families real tools, real answers, and real support—early.

Here’s the truth: you don’t need to wait for a diagnosis to seek help. You don’t need to be certain something is “wrong.” You just need a place to ask the question—and a team that listens.

Whether it’s head shape, tummy time, motor milestones, or body tightness… early intervention isn’t about reacting. It’s about empowering.

💡 Wondering if your baby’s development is on track? We’re here to help you find out.

Real Words from a CKD Parent 💬💙

“We had a truly wonderful experience with Carolina Kinder Development when our son was treated for torticollis. We began seeing them when he was just 8 weeks old and were discharged shortly after he turned one. We worked closely with several therapists, all of whom were incredibly detailed, thorough, and patient — guiding us through a challenging and unfamiliar season with care. They walked us through exercises, provided tools to use at home, and gave us the confidence and support we needed every step of the way.”
— J. Chadwick

At Carolina Kinder Development, we don’t just focus on movement—we focus on families. Our goal is to equip you with the why, the how, and the support to feel confident through every phase of care.

Torticollis can feel overwhelming at first—but with early intervention, a detailed plan, and trusted guidance, babies thrive. And so do parents.

When Should Walking Happen? 🚶‍♂️👶

Every baby develops at their own pace—but when it comes to walking, there is a general timeline to keep in mind.

👣 Most babies take their first steps between 12–15 months
👣 Some may walk a little earlier, some a little later
👣 What’s most important is how they get there—not just when

Before walking comes a whole series of important milestones:
🧍‍♀️ Pulling to stand
🧗‍♂️ Cruising along furniture
🪜 Squatting, reaching, shifting weight
👣 Practicing balance and confidence

If your baby isn’t walking by 18 months, or if they’re walking in a way that seems off-balance or asymmetrical, it’s a good idea to check in.

At Carolina Kinder Development, we look at the whole picture—strength, coordination, alignment, and movement patterns—to support babies through this exciting (and sometimes wobbly!) stage.

Have questions? We’re here to walk alongside you. 💙

When Should Rolling Happen (and How Do We Help It Along)? 🤔➡️👶

Rolling is one of the first big milestones in your baby’s motor development—but it doesn’t always happen on cue.

So, when should it happen?
🔹 Most babies begin rolling from tummy to back around 3–5 months
🔹 Rolling from back to tummy usually follows between 5–6 months

But how your baby gets there matters just as much as when. Rolling builds:
💪 Core strength
🧠 Body awareness
👐 Hand-eye coordination
🛌 And even leads to better sleep!

If your baby seems stuck or frustrated, here’s how you can help:
✔️ Tummy time (short and frequent!)
✔️ Encourage reaching across midline with toys
✔️ Use gentle, side-lying positions for play
✔️ Let them move freely—less time in containers!

At Carolina Kinder Development, we help babies build the movement skills and confidence to reach milestones like rolling with intention and ease. And we teach you what to look for, what to try, and when to get support.

Rolling is a big step—and we’re here for it.
