Allow me to reintroduce myself.. Itโ€™s Dr. Basheerah Enahora, actually! ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐ŸŽ“

I passed my doctoral dissertation defense today! Words canโ€™t describe the immense joy and gratitude I feel right now. To pour your heart and soul into something for years and see it successfully come to fruition is indescribable.

My PhD in Nutrition is complete, but the work to empower communities of color, particularly African Americans, to eat and live well continues. Thereโ€™s more work and research ahead. ๐Ÿค“

However, in the meantime, I will soak up this moment. Thanks to all of you for cheering me on throughout my doctoral journey!

I hope after some rest and presenting at a research conference next week, I can get back to posting on social media more regularly.

Such an honor to be featured in UNCG news this week! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ’™

Pursuing a PhD has been one of the hardest endeavors of my life, but my research with low-income Black youth has made it all worth it!

My sis, said I should be celebrating all that Iโ€™ve accomplished, including a Behavioral Intervention Scholars dissertation grant award from the Department of Health and Human Services and 3 publications. However, I canโ€™t wrap my head around celebrating until after my dissertation defense on May 26. Thereโ€™s still a lot more work to do. So, please send all the prayers and positive vibes you can, as I prepare for my defense! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ๐Ÿค“๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ

Hey girl ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿพ are you getting enough magnesium? ๐Ÿค”

Magnesium is one of the most abundant minerals in the human body and is needed for over 300 different physiological processes, including keeping your muscles and nerves working properly, bones strong, bowels moving and blood sugar under control. Most importantly, magnesium is key for a healthy heart. Magnesium is necessary for maintaining a steady heartbeat and normal blood pressure. I have found in my practice through nutrient deficiency intracellular testing that many women donโ€™t get enough magnesium. Research has found that low levels of magnesium may increase the risk of developing heart disease. Low magnesium levels have also been associated with high blood pressure.

So how much do you need? Women need 310-320 mg per day and men need 400-420 mg per day (note pregnancy needs are higher). So, how do we get enough magnesium? Focus on food first. Good sources of magnesium include nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, soy, avocado, leafy greens, whole grains, salmon and 70% and higher dark chocolate. ๐Ÿฅ‘๐Ÿฅฌ๐ŸŒฐ๐Ÿซ

Drop a ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ if you set a goal to eat well this year... ๐Ÿค”

The thing is most New Years resolutions around eating well are terribleโ€ฆ.. ๐Ÿ˜–๐Ÿ˜‘

By February most who resolved to eat well are right back to old habits.

Instead of extremes, like cutting out carbs, gluten, doing a juice fast, or only eating raw foods, here are simple, achievable things you can do every day to eat well and stick with it:

๐Ÿซ‘ Start with colorful produce - focus what you can add to each meal. What non-starchy vegetables do you like? Make a list and place it somewhere visible.

๐Ÿค Eat protein at each meal - eat a variety of lean protein, especially heart healthy fish, like salmon, cod and tuna, and vegetarian sources, like beans and lentils.

๐Ÿ†Try a new veggie each week - have fun with it and try new flavors. Turn those veggies into a sauce, dip or pizza topping. Keep a variety of fresh, frozen and canned veggies on hand.

๐Ÿซ Focus on fiber - fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, whole grains - all plant-based whole foods contain fiber. Including fiber-rich foods helps us stay fuller longer, manage our blood sugar, and keeps our bowels healthy.

๐Ÿ’ฆ Drink up - As a general rule of thumb, aim to drink half your body weight in kg in water. Although, Argus varies widely from person to person. Monitoring your urine is really the best hydration guide

๐Ÿ˜‹ Honor your hunger and fullness - get in touch with your bodyโ€™s innate hunger and satisfaction cues. Our bodies are intelligent, but many of us have learned to override those signals. Also, when your meals arenโ€™t balanced and/or your stomach is stretched beyond its normal capacity, it may be harder to recognize hunger and satiety cues.
