Why is Black Maternal Health important?

Black women in the United States are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women.

Addressing this disparity is crucial to ensuring equitable health outcomes and promoting reproductive justice.

This is a huge reason for my decision to support Black women as a Mental Health Therapist AND a Postpartum Doula. I love being able to support Black women and their families during such an intimate and extremely important time.

There are several steps that can be taken to decrease disparities in Black Maternal Health, including increasing access to quality healthcare, and addressing implicit biases in healthcare providers among a whole list of things that we have yet to address.

Shout out to all of you supporting and uplifting Black women and working to improve our maternal health. 💜🙌🏾

Are you constantly feeling guilty when you want to do something for yourself, have to cancel plans or take some PTO?

If yes, then you’re not alone! So many of us feel guilty when it comes to putting our needs before everyone else’s.

🤎Listen, mom guilt is real ok!! But it’s time to break that cycle of thinking when it comes to our health.

🤎Setting boundaries can do wonders for your self-care and overall well-being.

🤎Prioritize yourself by saying NO to things that don't align with your values and goals.

🤎Not only does this improve your mental health, but it also fosters better communication and respect in your relationships.

🤎Breaking the guilt cycle leads to a more balanced and satisfying life.

🤎Remember, it's okay to put yourself first sometimes! 🫶🏾

We all give and receive love in 5 different ways, according to long-time Marriage Counselor, Gary Chapman. These 5 love languages are:

❤️Words of Affirmation
❤️Acts of Service
❤️Receiving Gifts
❤️Quality Time
❤️Physical Touch

Understanding your partner’s love language can be a great benefit to your relationship. Knowing how your partner expresses and receives love can help you better communicate your feelings and show that you care.

For example, if your partner’s love language is physical touch, then you can give them a hug or kiss when you want to show them that you love them. On the other hand, if their love language is quality time, then you can take the time to spend a few hours together doing something special.

❤️Understanding this concept can also benefit relationships with your children and close friends.

Taking the time to understand how you and your loved ones express and receive love can help you build more meaningful and lasting relationships.

You can take a free quiz here to find out your love language: https://5lovelanguages.com/quizzes/love-language

“Parents of every culture, age, income level and race can develop perinatal mental health disorders. Symptoms can appear any time during pregnancy and the first 12 months after childbirth.”-PSI

Experiencing these symptoms doesn’t mean that something is wrong with you. It just means that you need additional support. Check out the resources on the last slide to help get you connected.

Happy Friday!

Been settling back in this week after taking some time off to spend with family.

It felt so great to focus on simply living in the present, enjoying ourselves and soaking up some well needed R&R!

I’ve been trying to add more natural ways to check back in with myself throughout the day. Sitting in silence (when I can) brings me back and helps to center me.

What works for you to help add more peace into your day?

Rest is Resistance, by Tricia Hersey was one of my favorite books to read this year.

What I loved most about this book was that the author normalized rest being something that we don’t need to create the perfect setting for. We can rest any and everywhere.

How can you honor your body today and seek REST?

Check out my blog post about the book here:

Forgiveness and Grace. This is what we need and what we deserve to give to ourselves daily. We are constantly learning, growing and evolving.

Think about some possible areas in your life where you may need to forgive yourself. đź’•

Holidays can be exciting and also stressful at the same time, as many of us know.

I usually think about those suffering and what they may be feeling. So, I’m remembering to hold space for all of those who may be experiencing really challenging times this season.

On the last slide I listed a few ways to help you get connected to some mental health resources if needed.

What have you found to be helpful for those in need?
