March is Social Workers Month 💙
This year’s national theme — Uplift. Defend. Transform. — beautifully captures the heart of social work, especially in transplant care.
Social workers uplift patients and families during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives — offering encouragement, stability, and hope when the path feels uncertain.
They defend — advocating for access, resources, and equitable care so that every patient has the opportunity to move forward. And they help transform lives — walking alongside individuals from evaluation through recovery, protecting the gift of a second chance at health.
At UVA Health Transplant, our social workers embody this theme every day.
"I initially pursued a job in transplant seeking a career change, but what I have gained has been far greater. Working in transplant has allowed me to witness every facet of the health care system while serving in multiple roles—as advocate, mentor, confidant, student, and teacher—not only to our patients and families but to my colleagues as well. This work has given me the chance to draw on my full range of social work skills to support families through one of the most challenging times in their lives, helping ensure their success not only during the transplant process but beyond, in life." — Jade
“Working in transplant and addiction care allows me to support patients during some of the most vulnerable and transformative moments of their lives. My role means helping individuals find stability, hope, and lasting recovery while protecting the gift of a second chance at health and life.” — Stacie
“I’ve always enjoyed the healthcare field and working here at UVA Health allows me to practice social work at a high level while hearing patient stories and assisting them through their transplant journey.” — Alex
To our social workers — thank you for uplifting, defending, and transforming the lives of the patients and families we serve. 💚
