NURSING
🧡 continue to latch baby as you’ve been doing
🩵don’t waste your phone battery by tracking feeding minutes. If baby is full term and has been gaining well, follow their lead
🩷in case the power goes out, you still need light for diaper changes and night feeds. Grab a camping lantern and some batteries, or a few spare power packs for your rechargeable egg lamps. Camping head lights work too!
💛 if baby’s skin is on your bare chest, that’s the best way to keep them warm. One of your maternal super powers is regulating baby’s temp with your body.
PUMPING
🧡be sure to have a hand/manual pump in case you lose power
🩷consider getting a rechargeable power pack to power an electric pump if you’re triple feeding or exclusively pumping
💙that camping head lamp can help washing pump parts at night if power is out
🩵if you don’t have one yet, consider getting an extra set of parts to minimize washing
BOTTLE FEEDING
🧡if you’re using formula, consider getting ready-to-feed (liquid) formula as powdered formula is not sterile and needs to be made using boiling water (per CDC recommendations)
💙remember that freshly pumped milk is good at room temp for 4-6 hours. If you can, use freshly pumped milk, that can allow you to keep your freezer closed (and keep your freezer the right temp)
FREEZER STASH
🩷try to avoid opening your freezer
🧡a full freezer or cooler will maintain cold temps longer. Add bottles of water or even crumpled newspaper to fill up empty space.
💙if you lost power, know that as long as your frozen milk has any ice crystals in it, you can refreeze it.
💛make use of the snow/ice outside - place it in a cooler outside and fill with snow as needed.
KEEPING WARM
💜generally the best way to keep baby at just the right temp is baby in a diaper, on mom’s bare chest, with any blankets or jackets over top of both of you as needed. Your skin adjusts to regulate your baby’s temperature. Amazing!
💛baby wearing is a great option! Make sure you have a cozy wrap and a back up carrier too!
