The days are crisper and shorter, and the sunshine seems different -- more golden, perhaps. Bugs are buzzing extra loud, and the leaves are turning. A gorgeous autumn is here, but behind it looms winter and another cold and flu season. Is your immune system ready?

Like squirrels preparing for winter by storing away acorns, we can prepare our immune systems for cold and flu season by storing vitamin D in our cells. Vitamin D is one of our most important resources in fighting off viruses, but the body needs to have it on hand before it gets sick -- don't think of vitamin D as a medicine to take once you're already infected.

Are you one of those squirrels who gathered and stored a bunch of vitamin D by getting out in the sun regularly this summer? If not, don't despair -- but it's probably time to supplement.

Some good sources of vitamin D include wild caught fish and shrimp, full-fat, grass fed dairy products, egg yolks, and mushrooms. But to store up the quantity of vitamin D you need to be healthy, food sources are usually not enough. While the RDA for vitamin D remains at 800 IU, many doctors now recommend a daily vitamin D3 supplement of 5000 to 10000 IU. (D3 is better used by your body than D2). Opt for the higher dosage if you're stressed or overweight.

Vitamin D3 supplements are widely available, but contact us if you have any questions as you select yours. Don't delay -- the sooner you start storing D in your cells, the more prepared you will be when cold and flu season hits.

Did you know that almonds are not "the best thing since sliced bread"? No, almonds are very high in a plant toxin called oxalate, and you shouldn't have more than the occasional handful, let alone daily almond milk, almonds for snacks, and almond flour baked goods.

Several months ago while on stage at KetCon, one of the largest keto-based conferences in the world, I informed everyone I will never eat almonds again. Doesn’t seem like a big deal, right? Well, imagine telling a group of people, all focused on eating a low carb diet, that one of the staple ingre...

As with wildlife and plants, summertime is our opportunity to build personal resources so we can thrive in the colder, darker seasons ahead. By making a few changes to your lifestyle, you can significantly reduce your seasonal allergies -- and improve other aspects of your health simultaneously. Allergy medications do have concerning side effects, so you will be also rid of -- or mostly rid of -- these too. In this article, we share suggestions on ways to calm your body's response to harmless allergens, and offer a number of effective, natural remedies to try in place of pharmaceutical symptom blockers.

In spring your body's vitamin D reserves are at their lowest, leaving you vulnerable to infections and diseases. By making a point of getting 20-30 minutes of unblocked sun exposure daily, you can start rebuilding your vitamin D -- and protection from a variety of illnesses.

Our Story

Robert Clickner received a master's degree in Oriental Medicine and has been in practice since 1999. He has been serving the Charlottesville community since 2002, and to date he has provided over 100,000 acupuncture and manual therapy (bodywork) treatments. Approximately 75% of patients are referred by other patients. He works with you to get to the root cause(s) of a health complaint; people almost always have important information and instincts about their bodies that help him solve the problem they are experiencing. Often there is an old injury or illness still making trouble, even in a different area of the body. Once it is treated, the body can do the rest of the healing on its own. He welcomes patient input in the process.

His specialties are in the following areas: Back pain, sciatica, shoulder pain, neck pain (other musculoskeletal pain), migraines, headaches, insomnia, menopause, fibromyalgia, whiplash and other accident trauma, post-surgical recovery, facial rejuvenation, and chronic fatigue. See a list of conditions he addresses regularly in clinic.

Robert uses a customized combination of acupuncture and manual techniques with each case and each visit, depending on your unique health care needs. Dietary recommendations and therapeutic exercises may also be included.

One of Robert's trademarks is that he is always educating himself and expanding his knowledge of what breaks down and creates health. In addition to completing legally required continuing education (see some of Robert's certifications here), he reads extensively on a variety of health topics.
