Prayers answered! So thrilled to be getting this great news. Keep fighting Joshua!
After transplant, there are many things doctors look at, including how much of the new bone marrow took over. This marrow ideally has a cancer fighting effect due to the nature of Graft Vs Host.
Joshua’s tests show that he has 100% chimerism, which is great news. He has a blood cancer, and with 100% donor marrow engrafted, we are excited!
This doesn’t mean his journey has ended, however. Please continue to pray that if there are any microscopic cancer cells in his body, that Caleb’s marrow produces blood that will seek them out and destroy them for good.
So far his blood work seems to indicate there is no recurrence and because it is such an aggressive cancer, it would likely show itself quickly.
He will continue to have scans for the rest of his life because after he is “cured” of Burkitt’s, the high intensity chemo and total body irradiation carries a risk of new cancers developing.
I am thankful to be having this conversation, though, because the reality was that we didn’t have much hope. There is no standard protocol for relapsed or refractory Burkitt’s but our team has opened doors that not many get to walk through.
