Yellow Door Foundation

Yellow Door Foundation Charity provides apartment lodging for families with a child fighting cancer or undergoing an organ transplant at UVA Children's hospital.

The Yellow Door Foundation understands that when a child is diagnosed with cancer, or needs an organ transplant, the entire family must shift away from the life they know in order to seek out the best treatments possible. This often means relocating for an extended period of time. For families with an immunocompromised child being treated at UVA Children’s hospital in Charlottesville, VA, Yellow Door provides fully-equipped individual apartments, FREE of charge, for the duration of the child’s treatment. We become their home away from home,
in the best environment possible to ensure positive outcomes. Families stay with us an average of 71 days, over 100 days for cancer families. Affording alternate lodging for that length of time is not feasible for the majority of families. Thanks to support from our community and beyond, Yellow Door is able to relieve that financial burden, while providing hope and healing for patients, siblings, parents and grandparents during the toughest times of their lives.

Prayers answered! So thrilled to be getting this great news. Keep fighting Joshua!

After transplant, there are many things doctors look at, including how much of the new bone marrow took over. This marrow ideally has a cancer fighting effect due to the nature of Graft Vs Host.

Joshua’s tests show that he has 100% chimerism, which is great news. He has a blood cancer, and with 100% donor marrow engrafted, we are excited!

This doesn’t mean his journey has ended, however. Please continue to pray that if there are any microscopic cancer cells in his body, that Caleb’s marrow produces blood that will seek them out and destroy them for good.

So far his blood work seems to indicate there is no recurrence and because it is such an aggressive cancer, it would likely show itself quickly.

He will continue to have scans for the rest of his life because after he is “cured” of Burkitt’s, the high intensity chemo and total body irradiation carries a risk of new cancers developing.

I am thankful to be having this conversation, though, because the reality was that we didn’t have much hope. There is no standard protocol for relapsed or refractory Burkitt’s but our team has opened doors that not many get to walk through.

This Valentine’s Day—and throughout February, American Heart Month—we are reminded that love, at its core, is an act of care. It shows up in quiet moments, long nights, and in the courage of families facing unimaginable journeys together.

6 months ago, Joshua got his T cells collected for CAR-T therapy; they were returned to him in November. Next week is a follow up scan to see if they’re still working. We will keep you posted but please pray for positive results. We would love nothing more than to move on to bone marrow transplant at the end of the month! 🩸
