'“It’s worth noting that we have not developed any new treatments which are widely used since the 1970s for depression, despite the fact that this is the major public-health problem in the Western world and middle-income countries,” says Glyn Lewis, who studies psychiatric disorders at University College London.'

Robin Carhart-Harris, David Nutt, and their team at Imperial College London are on a roll. Their new study of the effects of psilocybin on depression is a small but promising one. Three cheers for neuropsychopharmacologists with the courage and persistence to take this step towards finding the next, better treatment!

I spent 45 minutes discussing treatment resistant depression in veterans and they used 10 seconds to explain an internet trend. Oh well. Depressed people don't march!

Fascinating results from London made public today have set the Internet afire with runaway speculation, jokes, and general excitement. I'm just glad to see the first baby steps in a field of research that has for decades been underfunded due to social and cultural stigma, law enforcement, and political expediency. If we are ever to unlock the secrets of consciousness and hone our understanding of what makes certain brains 'sick' and others 'healthy,' we have to think (and research) outside of the box.

Kudos, Imperial College and the Beckley Foundation!

In a series of experiments, scientists have gained a glimpse into how the psychedelic compound affects brain activity.
