Open-Ended Play in Groups: The Magic of Shared Imagination

Open-ended play is more than just fun, it’s a powerful way for kids to learn communication, problem-solving, and flexibility. When children build stories together, they practice hearing perspectives , taking turns, and building onto one another’s ideas.

This collaboration helps:
• Strengthen narrative and sequencing skills
• Practice perspective-taking
• Feel ownership and pride in their group story
• Leave the session feeling connected and confident

Having the MOST fun with Miss Tracy creating our brains 🧠

For this activity, we use resources from to explore our SMARTS (exploring the unique strengths and skills each of us bring to a group).

Can’t go wrong with play dough and pipe cleaners! 🌟

For neurodivergent folks—especially those with RSD (Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria)—making a mistake can feel like the end of the world.

But mistakes aren’t proof that you’re “too much” or “not enough” — they’re part of learning.

Growth doesn’t come from perfection — it comes from reflection.

You can make mistakes AND be a kind, capable, and worthy person.

Let’s keep normalizing mistakes — and giving ourselves the grace to grow through them

We learn about what we attend to. Our attention and perception lead to concept and skill development in any area of learning (social included).

Some brains attend to details, soaking in facts and tidbits to create an incredible store of knowledge. Some may be able to tell you every peer’s favorite (and least favorite) game, best friends, and tv show of choice. Others may be able to escape to a rich fantasy world, immersing in plot lines and character dialogues.

There is no right way to allocate your attention. We should avoid assumptions that those who have been provided the same experiences perceived them in the same way.

Let’s Talk About the Differences: Hyperfixation vs Fixed Interest vs Hobby

Not all passions are the same—understanding the differences can help with self-awareness, mental health, and neurodivergent experiences!

1. Hyperfixation
• Definition: Intense, often short-term obsession with something (topic, activity, person) that takes over your focus.
• Common in: ADHD, Autism, and other neurodivergence.
• Example: You spend 10 hours straight researching a random historical event, skipping meals and sleep.
• Key trait: Feels urgent and all-consuming; may start suddenly and fade just quickly.

2. Fixed Interest (a.k.a. Special Interest)
• Definition: Long-term, deep, and meaningful focus on a subject.
• Common in: Autism, often brings joy, comfort, and expertise.
• Example: You’ve loved trains since childhood, and you still read about them, collect models, and visit museums.
• Key trait: Consistent over time; often emotionally grounding.

3. Interest or Hobby
• Definition: Something you enjoy doing or learning about regularly—but not obsessively.
• Common in: Everyone!
• Example: Playing guitar a few times a week for fun.
• Key trait: Balanced and manageable; doesn’t interfere with daily life.

Remember: All are valid forms of engagement, but understanding how they show up helps us better support ourselves and others ❤️
