Each class covers one body system (we’ve already covered the nervous system and the digestive system)— and explores its anatomy and physiology, how we interpret its common symptoms/disease patterns, and what herbs you can use to support specific conditions or as preventative care.

Our specialty at The Elderberry is creating custom herbal formulas. You may have had the experience of walking in the shop, telling us about a symptom you’re experiencing, and having us concoct a special potion for you within a matter of minutes.

How exactly do we come up with these custom formulas? How do we choose which herbs go into your unique blend?

While we can’t give you ALL of our secret sauce, our HERBALISM 101 Class Series pulls back the curtain on the art and science of using herbs for healing. Inside these classes, you learn traditional uses of various herbs and how you can work with them to support your own healing.

More about NOURISH:

NOURISH is based off of “Nourishing Traditions“ food ways, so it will discuss and promote animal products. That said, if you’re vegetarian or vegan, you can still benefit from this class. Natalie will discuss proper preparation of vegetables and grains, plus key principles that apply to anyone regardless of their specific diet.

The live class dates are subject to change with weather, but everyone will have access to the virtual live stream via zoom and the class recordings.

NOURISH is the first class in the Nourishment Class Series. Once a quarter, we’ll add to these foundational principles with topics like sleep, movement, and stress management.

This is a 2 part class: Class 1 is Monday, February 2nd. Class 2 is Monday the 9th.

Meg as she prepares a shrub for one of the herbal mocktails we’re serving next weekend.

This shrub is made from trifoliate orange, aka flying dragon, and it was gifted to us from the beautiful Mountain Run farm when we are at

Every aspect of this event is highly intentional, meant to serve as a microcosm of our mission and vision, a glimpse of the web we’ve been weaving behind the scenes 🕸️

There’s so much richness in just this one ingredient of this one mocktail. We could tell you a whole story about all the people, plants, and animals involved in getting this delicious citrus to us.

Next Saturday, we’re inviting you to step into our world, not just as an observer but as a participant. Each guest will bring a plant that will be transformed during the evening into a community hydrosol that we’ll all have as a physical reminder of the events’ liminal magic.

This winter, when we get that annual 2 inches of snow that effectively shuts down the city…will your medicine cabinet be stocked and ready to go if you come down with case of the cold-weather blues?

Imagine opening your cabinet to a full shelf of herbal medicines:
🙅🏽‍♀️flu-fighting elderberry syrup
🍵 immune-boosting herbal tea
🍄‍🟫 dried mushrooms to simmer in your pot of bone broth
🫚 ginger for hot foot baths that’ll warm your whole body
💪🏽 warm salves to rub on cold, sore muscles.

Believe it or not, these remedies are pretty easy to make at home, and that’s exactly what you’ll learn in STOCKING YOUR WINTER APOTHECARY, a workshop by owner and herbalist Meg Madden.

She’ll show you how to stock your home apothecary with immune boosting preparations. You’ll learn how to make potent decoctions, delicious syrups, lung-opening steams, and topical oils and salves to stock up for the winter.

Expect detailed instruction so you can confidently make these medicines at home, plus several recipe sheets for inspiration.

Our Story

The Elderberry is a community-based herbal apothecary where experienced herbalists will assist you in achieving better health and more vitality with one-on-one consultations, customized herbal preparations and interactive classes.

We’re here to help you feel more vibrant and connected to your life using the power of plant medicine. It can be confusing and overwhelming to figure out what would be helpful and appropriate for your situation. Consulting with an herbalist focuses on treating you, not a diagnosis, and yields an individualized formula based on the symptoms you’re experiencing. We create both internal and external preparations utilizing our extensive herbal apothecary including loose herbs, extracts and oils.

Wherever you are on that journey, we’ll be here to offer the support, guidance, and the empowerment you need to create a new balance in your life.
