I loved joining with untold numbers of people around the world this evening, in the Global Unity & Peace Meditation, atop Humpback Rock. I am a strong believer in the power of focusing our collective consciousness, for effects in the world.
Back in college, I was amazed to discover the body of research (conducted by Harvard, Stanford, etc) on the effects that a critical mass of meditators can have by focusing their healing energy on a particular city.
Get this! One such study (Orme-Johnson and Gelderloos, 1991) documented statistically significant impact in the city-wide reduction of influenza and other infectious diseases, hospital admission rates, and critical care outcomes during the period of the Collective Meditation event- as well as a significant reduction in crime rates and accidents. These outcomes were consistent in numerous cities where the experiment was carried out. I am keenly aware of the challenge of insuring the rigor of research studies and shielding against bias. Thus, I was amused to learn that some the most compelling data of that time was compiled by a major insurance company in Canada- whose sole motive was how to save money! (In a statistically equivalent sample group of over 2500 people, the subset who began practicing 20 minutes of deep rest twice daily, through Transcendental Meditation, incurred 13% less payout costs per year, growing to a 55% reduction in payout costs after 6 years)
All hands on deck! Let’s turn the tide together, NOW!
