🏀 For kids with genetic conditions that affect their heart, traditional advice often leans towards activity restriction, depriving them of the benefits sports can provide to their growing bodies.

Thanks to advancements in pediatric sports cardiology and growing pediatric-specific heart data, there’s more room for discussion in these gray areas. We spoke to UVA Health pediatric sports cardiologist and Pediatric Exercise Stress Laboratory medical director Peter Dean, MD to learn more.

You know your child best – so when Gracelin stopped breathing during an outing with her mother, Candice knew time was of the essence to find out what was wrong.

UVA Health's flagship academic teaching hospital is University Medical Center in Charlottesville, which is also the home of UVA Health Children’s. Ranked #1 in Virginia, UVA Health Children’s delivers expert care that can detect rare, life-threatening conditions like ALCAPA before it’s too late.

"That's one of the things we take pride in here [at UVA Health] and one of the things that I think sets us apart is the ability to really get that connection – to get an exam that couldn't be done; to make a child comfortable enough to do what is needed to provide that care."

Ice is no laughing matter. But with the kids out of school and only so much space in your house, sledding sounds like a great idea! Here are some tips from pediatric emergency doctor Kathleen Noorbakhsh, MD on how you can still have fun and be safe in these wintery conditions.

🪖 Sledding is a great opportunity to wear a helmet. A typical sled on snow can go 20 mph – that's faster than most kids can even bike! In the current icy conditions, sleds may be even faster.
🌳 Sled in an area without obstacles or roads. Specifically, children should not slide down hills that end in trees, fences, vehicles, guard rails, or bodies of water.
🏄 🚫 Use sleds as they are intended, sitting up and facing forward
👩‍👦 Young children should be supervised when sledding
🧤 Children should dress appropriately for the weather, wearing coats, mittens, hats, and proper footwear.
🧠 To reemphasize – wear a helmet. Brains are essential.

"Thanks to everyone, all the work that you do; all the education you take; all the efforts you do so you can take care of our children. Thank you and I wish you the best in whatever you decide to do. I hope it's still in the medical field, because you guys are good at it!" 💜🔔

Olivia G., the patient featured in our hospital education program video last month, rung the bell to celebrate the end of her treatment this week! Dozens of team members, including a significant portion of Olivia's extended care team, were on hand to celebrate with the family as they ended their time at University Medical Center.

Toddlers can seemingly go days with little more than single container of berries. Or suddenly decide that cookies are the only food that matters. Even worse, today’s favorite could become tomorrow’s ‘ick.’

Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) can cause someone to limit their diet to only a few foods. From the outside, it can look a lot like picky eating. But there’s a world of difference between these two. Trying to treat ARFID as though it’s picky eating can actually make it worse.

🥦 Here’s what to know about picky eating, ARFID, and how to tell it apart from other eating disorders. You can learn more about the specifics of ARFID at https://bit.ly/4qTECMA

UVA Health Children's has the largest newborn heart program in Virginia. We're also the only center in Virginia that can provide the full range of care that may be needed, including for conditions like Anomalous Left Coronary Artery from the Pulmonary Artery (ALCAPA), a rare and serious congenital heart defect.

With ALCAPA, the left coronary artery—which is supposed to supply oxygen-rich blood from the aorta—originates instead from the pulmonary artery. This means Gracelin's heart wasn’t getting the oxygen it needed to function properly. Thankfully, she was able to be scheduled for surgery within days of a diagnosis and the three-year-old is now off all medications and wears her scar with pride.
