April is Cesarean Awareness Month — and at Kindred, we believe every birth story deserves to be held with care.

About 1 in 4 babies born at Martha Jefferson and nearly 1 in 3 at UVA arrive via cesarean. That means a lot of families in our community are navigating belly birth — planned and unplanned, expected and surprising, straightforward and complicated.

However your baby came into the world, that story is valid. That experience matters.

Cesarean birth is major surgery and requires meaningful recovery and profound strength. It can also bring grief, unanswered questions, and feelings that are hard to name. All of it gets to be true at the same time.

Swipe through for information on what cesarean birth is, how to prepare and advocate for your experience, and what healing can look like — physically and emotionally.

Your birth story matters. You are not alone in it.

🤍 Save this to share with someone who needs it.

We are so excited to welcome Sheila to the Kindred community! She’ll be teaching Family Yoga, a class designed for children ages 3 to 8, where we explore breath and movement through songs, books, and stories. It’s a beautiful opportunity to coregulate and bond through purposeful, playful movement together.

🌸🌺🌷

Meet Sheila:

I spend my days playing! With over 25 years of experience in child development and speech language pathology, I know the value of playful interactions that engage the whole child. When I was invited to teach children’s yoga 14 years ago, I jumped at the chance to deepen my understanding of nervous system regulation, breathwork, and intentional movement that supports children throughout their lifetime.

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is being trusted to hear a parent’s concerns, validate their experience, and walk alongside them as they support their child and family. I can’t wait to bring that same presence and care to Kindred.

I am energized by learning, growing, and embracing new adventures. Last summer my son told me he loved the way I noticed and admired the smallest things. I strive to never lose that sense of wonder at what’s unfolding right in front of us every day.

In Family Yoga, expect big energy, goofy faces, loads of laughter, and plenty of space for your littles to share their ideas. Can’t wait to see you on your mat!

This week is National Infertility Awareness Week, and this year’s theme is .

More than a diagnosis. More than a statistic. More than the clinical definition.

Infertility touches people across every walk of life, including LGBTQ+ individuals and couples whose paths to parenthood are often invisible in these conversations. Every story is different. Every journey carries its own grief, hope, and complexity.

But when we tell those stories out loud, something shifts. We stop being isolated data points and start becoming a community that sees the full picture.

If this is your journey, you are not alone. And if someone you love is walking this road, now you know a little more about how to show up for them.

Share this carousel. Tag someone who needs to hear it. And let’s keep making space for every story.

Something special is happening at Kindred this weekend. We’re welcoming Kelly Cox of Cox Pregnancy and Birth Support for Pre/Postnatal Yoga Teacher Training, and we couldn’t be more excited about the ripple effect, more teachers carrying this knowledge into their communities.

Saturday, those teachers-in-training will be practicing with you. Prenatal at 9AM. Baby & Me at 11AM. All are welcome.

A heads up: there are no classes on Sunday this weekend while training is in session. We’ll be back to our regular schedule on Monday and are so grateful for your understanding.

I just returned from Spinning Babies Parent Educator training, and I’m still sitting with how much it deepened my understanding of birth.

A few things that stayed with me:

Birth is a sacred event. It asks us to slow down, tune in, and trust what our bodies already know — both mentally and physically.

Your baby is an active participant. They take up the space available to them. We can talk to them, encourage them, trust them to find their way earthside.

And the small things matter. A calf stretch while you brush your teeth. A ball squeeze before bed. A jiggle as you drift off to sleep. It all builds on each other.

I’m now a provisional Spinning Babies Parent Educator and I’m bringing this work to Kindred. Sessions are scheduled for June 27, July 25, and August 22 — with limited spots available.

Find them on our schedule at kindredcville.com/schedule and navigate to the date.

🌸 As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we’re celebrating three extraordinary women whose work in maternal health has changed — and continues to change — lives around the world.

Monica McLemore 🩺
A nurse, researcher, and reproductive justice advocate, Dr. McLemore has dedicated her career to understanding and eliminating inequities in maternal and reproductive health. Her research centers the most marginalized communities, with the belief that when we care for those most overlooked, care improves for everyone.

Mary Seacole 🌍
Long before modern maternal care existed, Mary Seacole was on the front lines — healing, nurturing, and advocating for the sick and wounded. A pioneer of holistic and herbal medicine passed down through generations, she broke through racial and institutional barriers to provide compassionate care when it was needed most.

Virginia Apgar 👶
Dr. Apgar revolutionized how we welcome new life into the world. Her Apgar Score — a simple, five-point assessment given to newborns moments after birth — is still used in delivery rooms worldwide and has saved countless infant lives since its creation in 1952.

These women remind us that progress in maternal care is built on courage, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to doing what’s right. 💙
