Radiology has a powerful role to play in global health—and this program is helping lead the way. Founded in honor of Dr. Spencer B. Gay, the Spencer B. Gay Program was created to foster meaningful, sustainable educational exchange between the UVA Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging and underserved international health care communities.

Through reciprocal learning, residents gain invaluable clinical, educational, and leadership experience while partnering with institutions around the world to strengthen access to imaging education and care. What began as a shared passion for service and global collaboration has grown into an enduring program rooted in mentorship, innovation, and impact.

As we introduce this year’s cohort, we celebrate a legacy of global engagement, resident leadership, and the belief that radiology can help bridge gaps in health care worldwide.

At UVA Radiology and Medical Imaging, our fellowship programs are built around a shared purpose: caring for patients, training future leaders, and advancing medical knowledge through innovation and collaboration.

Across all subspecialties, fellows gain broad clinical experience, progressive independence, and close mentorship from dedicated faculty. Teaching and research opportunities are tailored to individual interests, preparing graduates for careers in academic radiology, advanced subspecialty training, or community practice.

This video offers a closer look at one of our programs — the Musculoskeletal Fellowship — where fellows develop advanced interpretive and procedural skills in a collaborative clinical environment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUS_f1S4Zkc

Professor James R. Stone, MD, PhD, has received funding from the Department of Defense for research projects to better identify, prevent, and treat brain injuries for military personnel caused by repeated blast exposures.

The four research projects funded by the $5.3 million grant are in collaboration with the Naval Medical Research Command. They will explore the role of the neurovascular unit – the interactions between blood vessels in the brain and brain tissue – in maintaining healthy brain function and how damage to the unit can cause chronic health conditions.
