“It was a week of growth, learning, and valuable connections that I will carry into my future practice.” — Olivia Richardson, MD

Last month, UVA Radiology faculty member, Dr. Amy Taylor and IR residents, Drs. Amy Crumb and Olivia Richardson traveled to South Korea for the 23rd International Intensive Course for Interventional Radiology hosted by the Korean Society of Interventional Radiology.

For our residents, the experience was more than a conference. It was a week of hands-on learning, collaboration with international experts, and practicing complex procedures—from deploying coils and stents to performing a TIPS in a hands-on procedural training.

Dr. Taylor also shared UVA’s expertise with a global audience, presenting lectures on trauma embolotherapy and gynecologic embolotherapy.

During the trip, the group visited ASAN Medical Center—the largest hospital in Seoul—where they observed cases and connected with radiology trainees and faculty.

For Drs. Crumb and Richardson, the week was an unforgettable milestone in their training and a reminder that innovation in medicine grows through global collaboration.

Last month, staff members at the University of Virginia’s Breast Care Center gathered to celebrate Medical Assistant Kylee Lambert, the latest recipient of the BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) award!

The BEE Award recognizes UVA Health team members who work alongside our nurses to impact patients' experiences — just as bees and flowers depend on one another.

And there’s no doubt that Kylee is deserving of this recognition! Team members are consistently impressed by her medical skill, particularly with lab draws and IV placement. But equally noticeable is the level of poise and kindness in her work. In the words of Julie Zaydfudim, BSN, RN: “Patients absolutely adore Kylee! She has a calm, comforting presence and naturally provides peace and reassurance during moments that can be stressful or overwhelming.”

Meanwhile, Kylee is a team player across the Breast Care Center. Whether it’s precepting new hires or prepping for a new clinic’s opening, she is a true asset in all of her work and plays “an essential role in the success and stability of our team.”

Congratulations to Kylee!

The University of Virginia has recognized two faculty members from the Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging as part of the 2025 Research Achievement Awards, honoring their exceptional contributions to discovery and innovation.

James R. Stone, MD, PhD, vice chair of research, was named among UVA’s Top 25 Sponsored Funding Recipients. His work is advancing the understanding, identification, prevention, and treatment of brain injuries in military personnel exposed to repeated blast events. Last fall, he secured a $5.3 million federal grant supporting four research initiatives in this critical area.

Christopher M. Kramer, MD, professor of radiology and chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, was nominated by the School of Medicine for going “above and beyond” in research. His nationally recognized work in cardiac imaging, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and peripheral arterial disease continues to shape the future of cardiovascular care.

These recognitions reflect UVA’s enduring commitment to research excellence and to improving lives through innovation in medical imaging and cardiovascular medicine.

The Diagnostic Medical Physics team at the University of Virginia Medical Center is proud to announce the launch of our Imaging Physics Residency Program, approved in Summer 2025!

This two-year program is currently seeking accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP) and is designed with a strong clinical focus. Residents gain hands-on experience across all imaging modalities, preparing them to work independently as clinical imaging physicists and to sit for American Board of Radiology board certification exams.

We’re excited to welcome our first resident:

Damian Ream, MS
Diagnostic Medical Physics Resident | 2026–2028
Former Institution: Georgia Institute of Technology (M.S.)

UVA was Damian’s first job out of college, working in radiation safety in 2019 — an experience that sparked his passion for medical physics and led him to pursue his master’s degree. When he learned UVA was launching its own residency program, the choice was clear.

“UVA Health saved my wife’s life after an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and welcomed my daughter into the world. The work done here is second to none. There’s nowhere else I could have imagined spending my residency years.”

We’re honored to have Damian as part of this inaugural class and grateful to the team whose dedication made this program possible. The future of imaging physics at UVA is bright!

Celebrating Outstanding Teamwork and Patient Care!

Please join us in congratulating Anthony Calise, Robert Hunsberger, Kohl Kershisnik, and Leslie Wood for receiving the Charles L. Brown Award for excellence in patient care!

Team Lead Calise shared, “We feel incredibly honored to receive this award. The recognition not only validates the countless hours of dedication, collaboration, and innovative thinking, but also underscores our shared commitment to creating a safer work environment for our colleagues while continuously improving outcomes for the patients we serve.”

The Charles L. Brown Award honors UVA Health teams that demonstrate outstanding efforts in patient safety and quality improvement. This year’s projects focused on making radiology team members safer and reducing urinary tract infections in inpatients—efforts that truly make a difference for our patients and staff.

Chief Tracey R. Hoke, MD, MSc, praises the teams: “The Charles Brown Award acknowledges both rigor and outcome in performance improvement activities, and is an important part of our celebration of patient care excellence and team member respect. We are very proud of these improvement teams!”
