The PA Compact, which has been working to make it easier for PAs to practice in other states, has just released its fall newsletter. Please check it out here: https://www.pacompact.org/news/

The PA Compact is important because it allows increase access to PA services and streamlines the process of practicing in multiple states. Virginia joined the compact in 2024, which actually led to the activation of the compact. We expect PAs to be able to take advantage of the compact in early 2027.

One of our fellow PA-S1s, Alex, is a former Anatomy and Physiology TA who also worked in transplant surgery before PA school! Having such a diverse class provides us an opportunity to learn from both our wonderful professors AND each other!

We took a survey, and here are the statistics on what our cohort did for their clinical experiences before starting PA school:

Family medicine/Pediatrics: 3

Urgent care/E.R.: 19

Surgery: 2

Specialized Medicine (including OB/GYN, orthopedics, ENT, dermatology, etc.): 14

Hearing of everyone's unique pt care experience at the University of Lynchburg PA Medicine program helps bring real life perspective to the didactic setting. There are a variety of ways you can learn before PA school!

I’m sure we have all heard the scary stories about how challenging PA school can be, but we’re here to say there is a lot of happy moments during all of it!

Here are some common misconceptions our fellow PA-S1s noted:

“The Professors are scary!”- our classmates are here to tell you that our professors are extremely approachable and always reminding us that they want us to lean on them for support.

“You have no social life”- not so true! We are able to make time both as a class to have fun/decompress, and as individuals finding time to see family, workout, have fun outside of the classroom.

For example, our class loves our pickle ball nights at the Carilion Wellness Center!

“You won’t make friends” remember: everyone is looking for friends here, too, and you will bond throughout this unique experience!

“It’s a competition” we have learned that once you’re in school, you truly take on a “we’re all in this together” mentality. We share everything- notes, study guides, Quizlet's- and are always cheering on one another’s success.

Last one: the infamous Imposter Syndrome. Something we often remind ourselves is that we are all here for a reason!
