This past week, between emergency responses, members of Local 4023 (Groups 1 & 2) took part in specialized SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) confidence training.

To simulate the conditions firefighters face inside burning buildings, members wore “blackout lenses” over their facepieces, creating zero-visibility environments similar to heavy smoke. Working without being able to see, they relied entirely on touch, training, and their knowledge of their equipment to identify and correct simulated issues with their air packs and other essential tools.

In a real fire, visibility is often limited or completely gone. This type of hands-on training ensures our firefighters remain calm, confident, and capable of solving problems quickly in environments that are Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH).
Training like this happens regularly to ensure we are always prepared to serve our community safely and effectively.

Local 4023 members were able to train on “First Due Operations” today despite the chilly weather. Being “First Due” refers to being the first units arriving to an emergency, usually a fire call.
Training like this keeps crews sharp on their assigned tasks in the event of a structure fire.

Photo 📸: Probationary FF Kevin O’Rouke pulled the crosslay (a pre connected 200’ 1.75” fire hose primarily used in fire attacks) and practices advancing the line and flowing water.

Earlier today, Local 4023 Members from Groups 1&2 met at the Joslin Camp for annual ice rescue training.

Firefighters must be prepared to rescue people (and animals) who get in trouble, either in the water or on the ice, in the winter.
During our scenario, we simulate a person in distress who has “fallen through” the ice. We train on the steps, safety precautions, and the multiple ways of rescue.
Local 4023 strives to maintain our professionalism, proficiency, and expertise in our tasks, regardless of the environment! But we also like to have fun too. Check out those smiling faces! 🧊 🌊 🧊

Local 4023 is running our Home Heating Fuel Raffle, see the flyer for details. Winners will be awarded a gift certificate to their supplier of choice. Proceeds to help fund IAFF Local 4023 - Charlton MA community outreach initiatives. Drawing to be held once all tickets are sold, and will be broadcast on Facebook live.
