Certified Athletic Trainers make my job in Sports Medicine possible. ATC’s are the eyes and ears to recognize sports related injuries as well as a bridge of communication between the physician and the athlete. Athletic Trainers are a vital and essential part of our team. Make sure you reach out to your favorite Athletic Trainer this month!

This is a simple guide to help you determine when to use heat or ice to help treat your injury or condition.

❄️ When dealing with injuries, it’s usually best to choose ice if the injury is acute (less than 6 weeks old). The chill constricts blood vessels which numbs pain, relieves inflammation and limits bruising.

🔥 If you’re dealing with lingering injuries (older than 6 weeks), it’s okay to use heat. The increased blood flow relaxes tight muscles and relieves aching joints. This is especially helpful to improve range of motion on a joint that isn’t moving as well.

🩺 As always, it is important to discuss your symptoms and concerns with your healthcare provider to help determine what works best for you and your injury/condition.

Did you know that turmeric can reduce inflammation? It’s true! Turmeric is a highly versatile spice commonly used in cooking, but its anti-inflammatory properties can also reduce the aggravation that people with arthritis feel in their joints. In addition, this spice can also contribute to healthy digestion as a result of its antioxidant properties. Here are some easy and delicious ways to add turmeric into your diet:

🍳 add it to scrambled eggs
🌶 toss it with roasted vegetables
🍹 blend it into a smoothie
☕️ add it to your coffee, or try the golden latte from which includes turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, vanilla, and honey. It’s my personal favorite!
