In May 2022, a mass was discovered in a patient's retroperitoneum during a routine imaging scan for kidney stones. Further testing confirmed the presence of a rare form of cancer, a liposarcoma, which had infiltrated the space behind the intestines and involved the spleen, pancreas, left kidney, and left colon. Despite facing numerous comorbidities, including kidney disease, high BMI, heart disease, and diabetes, the patient displayed remarkable fortitude and resilience.
Thankfully, with the help of nurse navigators at the Rees Skillern Cancer Institute who helped him with physical fitness/prehab, nutrition, social work, and multiple other issues, and cardiologists at the Chattanooga Heart Institute, the patient was able to move forward with surgery.
A multi-disciplinary team of specialists was assembled to provide a comprehensive approach to the patient's care, including radiation therapy performed by Dr. Tru-Khang Dinh, Tennessee Oncology, and a complex surgical resection performed by Dr. Justin Wilkes and Dr. Rishabh Shah, CHI Memorial Surgical Associates, and Dr. Jeffrey Mullins, CHI Memorial Urology Associates. The procedure resulted in the removal of a specimen weighing 34 pounds and measured at over 28 inches long.
The patient emerged from the procedure with a remarkable recovery, and is now thriving. The successful outcome of this case is a testament to the benefits of a comprehensive approach to care and the power of hope in the face of adversity.
