Hostile dependency is a toxic relationship pattern where someone deeply relies on another for emotional support but simultaneously resents and attacks them for that very dependency, often seen in families or romantic partners as an "I hate you, but I can't live without you" dynamic, characterized by constant conflict, a push-pull between needing and rejecting the other, and a struggle for autonomy. It stems from an inability to self-validate, leading to feelings of being trapped, controlled, and resentful of the person who meets their needs.
