August is Amblyopia Awareness Month. Amblyopia is defined by the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus as: "loss of vision in one or both eyes caused by conditions that impair the normal visual input during the period of development of vision."

A child's visual pathways can be done developing anywhere between the ages of 8-12. Early detection is key in order to best treat amblyopia before the vision loss becomes permanent. Your child's vision may appear normal to you, but they could be only relying on one eye, and the visual pathways of the other eye may not be developing properly.
