Mamie Joan Jackson Kimbell was born on December 6, 1932 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026, in Chattanooga, Tennessee at the age of 93.

Joan’s faith was an essential and very important part of her life. She loved the Lord and accepted Christ at a young age. She was baptized at St. Francis Catholic Church in 1946 and when St. Francis closed its doors, she continued her spiritual journey as a devoted member of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Chattanooga, TN. She lived a life filled with love, dedication, and service to all her family and community.

Joan was an avid traveler and lived in several places, including Atlanta, Ga, Detroit, MI, New York City and Houston, TX. Before eventually coming back to her roots in Chattanooga, TN. She was a proud graduate of Howard High School's Class of 1950 and one of the founding members of the Duchess Social Club. She was also one of the first majorettes at Howard. Her thirst for knowledge led her to further her education at a business school in Detroit, Michigan, along with numerous other educational classes and professional conferences. She was also a former member of the Chattanooga Business and Professional Women’s Club and many other professional organizations.

While living in Chattanooga, she served as School Secretary at Howard High School, Executive Assistant to the Director at Dodson Avenue Health Center, and the Director of Admissions at Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation from where she retired. Her professional career was marked by significant contributions in various roles that left lasting impressions on everyone she met. She was the recipient of numerous awards and accolades throughout the years in which she was extremely proud. After retiring, she continued part-time work as a Receptionist at the Chattanooga Convention Center and as a Customer Service Assistant at Willowbrook Mall after relocating to Houston, TX.

Family was everything to Joan. She is survived by her sons, Gregory Oglesby of Houston, Texas, Ralph (Vivian) Kimbell Sr. of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Reginald Kimbell Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia; her sister, LaDana Taylor Houser of Kenner, Louisiana; and her brother Darrell Taylor of Chattanooga, Tennessee. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews, cousins, daughters in-law, grands in-law, godchildren, relatives and friends, who will forever cherish her memory.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Reginald Kimbell Sr.; her parents, Daniel and Lila Taylor, Jr.; Lewis Jackson; her daughter, Valarie Dunlap Williams; brother, Daniel Taylor III; grandsons, Sean Oglesby, Sr., Gregory and Nicholas Morgan; maternal grandmother, Sallie (SaSa) Aiken; maternal grandfather; paternal grandparents; great niece, Christyle (Chrissy) Ousley; brother in-law, Fred Houser, numerous aunts and uncles; cousins; other family members; friends; and her best friend, Evelyn Ghiden Newman.

Joan will always be remembered for her loving nature and giving spirit. She had a wonderful sense of humor paired with a contagious laugh that could brighten any room. While witty and intelligent with an abundance of wisdom to share, she could also be a little bossy. Joan was an endearing and true matriarch who worked tirelessly for all those she loved. Her hugs were legendary among those fortunate enough to have received them. And let’s not forget that she was an animated and gripping storyteller. Her legacy is one of devotion to her family and to all who knew her. She touched countless lives with her warmth and generosity.

Public viewing will begin at 2:00 PM, on Thursday, March 12, 2026, until 6:00 PM at the funeral home.

Legend Ellis Freeman, 35, was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee and passed away on
February 20 in Chattanooga.

Legend had a way of walking into a room and bringing light with him. He kept a smile on his face, made friends everywhere he went, and truly never met a stranger. He loved his children with his whole heart. Legend was a hard worker steady, dependable, and determined. He built a career through his work with Amazon, Verizon, and John P. Franklin Funeral Home. Legend was a graduate of Family Christian Academy (homeschool). He also loved football, especially the 6-time Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots.

Legend was preceded in death by his father, Rev. William C. Freeman; his brothers, Errol D. Freeman and Everett C. Freeman; his sister, Angela Freeman; his grandfathers, William Freeman, Louis Chislom Sr., and Ernest Sanders; his grandmothers, Deloria A. Westfield and Dorothy CokerSanders; and his uncle, Louis Chislom Jr.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving mother, Elizabeth Chislom Freeman; his precious children, his son Ethan Ellis Freeman, his daughters Jade Freeman, Kaleigh Freeman, Penelope Freeman and her mother Haley Leamon Freeman, and stepsons, Ryker and Brodie; his devoted Elaine McDevitt; his siblings, Evann D.W. Freeman, Vanessa Freeman, and William “Billy” Cornelius Freeman III; his uncles, Glenn Chislom, Frank Westfield, Ralph Chislom, Rev. Tyrus Chislom, and Bobby Jones Sr.; his aunts, Laurel Buttram, Valerie Jennings-Dillard, Goldie Thomas, Della Chislom-Harden; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends who loved him and will miss him deeply.

The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 9, at Ridgedale Baptist Church located at 1831 Hickory Valley Rd., Chattanooga, TN, with Rev. Tyrus Chislom officiating. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memory Gardens East.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 8, from 4:30 p.m.–6:00 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home.

Willie Ed Brown, 68, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away on January 24, 2026, at Parkridge Hospital in Chattanooga.

He was born on December 4, 1957, in Choctaw County, Alabama, to the late Benjamin Brown Sr. and Bessie Mae Brown. Mr. Brown was educated in Chattanooga and attended Kirkman High School. He was employed with the Chattanooga Times Free Press and was known for his strong work ethic. He accepted Christ and was a member of Prospect Baptist Church.

He loved his family, especially spoiling his grandchildren, and he enjoyed watching all kinds of sports. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Brown Sr. and Bessie Mae Brown; brothers, Benjamin Brown Jr. and Johnny Earl Brown; sister, Lucy M. Ezell all of Chattanooga, TN He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Antwan L. Brown Sr. of Chattanooga, TN; brothers, Willie Lewis Brown Sr. of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Anthony Brown; sister, Yvonne D. Grier; grandchildren, Shucorria Brown, Zi’Shanti Brown, Elijah Brown, Antiwan Brown Jr., Anasia Brown, and Ayden Brown; great-grandchild, Jayce Henderson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Nathaniel Newson "Jim Bo" Thurman, 77, born in Chattanooga, TN, on May 10, 1948, was the son of the late George Newson and Lillie Thurman Taylor. He passed away on February 25, 2026.
Nathaniel was a graduate of Riverside High School, class of 1968. He retired from Alco Chemical Company.

He was a member of The World's Church of the Living God, where he sang with the Mass Choir, the Anointed Sons of God Singing Group, and Shalom Emmanuel.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert Taylor and Larry Taylor.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 53 years, Zettie P. Thurman; sisters, Diane Domineck and Edna Hudgins; brother, Tyrone (Kathy) Newson, all of Chattanooga; brothers-in-law, William (Carolyn) Blake, Robert (Jacqueline) Blake, Larry Blake, all of Chattanooga; sisters-in-law, Anna Blake and Cynthia Smith of Chattanooga; best friends, Charles and Carleen Love, a host of nieces, other family, and friends.
