Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes you can have when you’re pregnant. It happens when your body doesn’t make enough insulin. That makes it harder for your body to change sugar into energy.

It usually starts around week 24 of pregnancy. You may not have any symptoms. So your doctor will often test for it when you’re between 24 and 28 weeks pregnant.

If you have this condition, your doctor will help you create a treatment plan to help keep you and your baby healthy. It’s important to follow your doctor’s treatment plan. Your doctor may also recommend medication if you need it.

This condition usually goes away after your baby is born. But it can increase your risk of getting type 2 diabetes later. Your doctor can tell you about ways to lower your risk.

Colorectal cancer screenings can help protect your health. Most colorectal cancer starts as small growths called polyps. They aren’t cancer yet. But they can turn into it. Colorectal cancer screenings can help your doctor find these polyps before they become dangerous.

There are several types of screenings available. A colonoscopy looks at your entire colon with a tiny camera. Stool tests check for signs of cancer in stool samples. A flexible sigmoidoscopy looks at just the lower part of your colon.

Most people should start screenings at age 45. But your doctor can help you decide when to start screenings based on your health and family history.

Taking time to prepare for a doctor visit can help you feel more confident. Here are some tips to help you get ready for your next appointment.

When you schedule, ask your doctor for any special help you need. This might be something like a quiet waiting area or more time with the doctor. Ask if you can fill out any forms before you get there. Or ask if they’re available in an accessible format.

Before your visit, write down any changes in your health or any questions you want to ask the doctor. Make a list of your medications, including how much you take and how often.

During your visit, use things that make you more comfortable, like headphones or a tablet while you wait. Be direct about your concerns. And ask your doctor to repeat anything you don’t understand.

Taking care of your teeth can help you stay healthy. It’s important to brush and floss regularly. But did you know certain foods can help keep your mouth healthy?

Chewing fruits and vegetables helps your mouth produce saliva. That helps remove acid and leftover food from your mouth and teeth. Some vegetables, like celery, can scrape food off your teeth as you eat.

Drinking unsweet green and black tea can help fight plaque, a bacteria film that grows on teeth. The antioxidants in tea help lower the amount of plaque on your teeth.

Eating disorders can affect anyone, even teens. And they can hurt your health if they aren’t treated. So it’s important to know the signs and how to get help.

Eating disorders don’t always look the same. But these are some common signs to watch out for.

You may have emotional signs like overthinking food choices, feeling anxious about weight or food, skipping meals, or thinking a lot about your body weight or shape.

Physical signs may include changes in weight, stomach pain, dizziness, feeling cold all the time, throwing up or mood swings.

If you’re struggling, you’re not alone. And you can get help. Talk with someone you trust, like a parent or teacher. You can also talk with your doctor. They can help figure out what’s going on and help you get the right care.

Pollen is a small particle from plants. And it can cause allergy symptoms in many people. These symptoms may include sneezing, runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes. If you have allergies, you can do things at home to help feel better.

Check your local weather forecast to find the pollen count. Keep your windows closed when the pollen count is high. And try to stay indoors as much as you can. If you have to go outside, take a shower and change your clothes when you come back inside. And be sure to change your home’s air filters regularly. They trap dust and other allergens to help keep your home’s air clean.

And if your symptoms aren’t getting better, talk with your doctor. They may recommend other changes or medication to help.

February is American Heart Month. Now’s a great time to learn about food you can eat to help keep your heart healthy.

Eating a heart-healthy diet can help your heart function at its best. When you’re building your plate, try to include things like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, low-fat dairy, and nuts and seeds. An example plate could include salmon with broccoli with low-fat cheese and a side of brown rice. And you can eat almonds as a snack throughout the day.

Remember, you don’t have to change everything at once. Starting with small steps can help you stick with these healthy habits.

For more tips on building a healthy plate, go to MyPlate.gov.

Has your child gotten their HPV vaccine? Human papillomavirus, or HPV, is a common virus that can cause cancer later in life. It spreads through skin-to-skin contact. And anyone can get the virus.

The HPV vaccine can help protect your child. And it’s most effective when it’s given before someone is exposed to the virus.

Your child can get their HPV vaccine as early as age 9, but they’ll need more than one dose for it to be effective. The CDC recommends your child get their first dose at age 11 or 12. Then, your child will need their second dose 6–12 months later. If your child has both doses within five months or doesn’t get their first dose until they’re between 15 and 26 years old, they’ll need three doses total.

If you have any questions about the vaccine, talk to your child’s doctor.
