AIM Center, Inc.

AIM Center, Inc. We are non-medical and non-clinical, however, we work in concert with other professionals to provide comprehensive mental health services.

The AIM Center clubhouse provides psychosocial rehabilitation services to create hope, community and social change to enrich and celebrate the lives of people living with serious mental illness. AIM Center is a nonprofit mental health program offering employment, education, housing, socialization, and wellness opportunities for adults living with serious mental illness. Our focus is recovery! What makes us unique to the region? Utilizing a psychosocial rehabilitation model known as the "Clubhouse program," the AIM Center allows Clubhouse members to develop relationships and create an individual recovery plan, whilst working side by side with other program participants and staff. Since 1989, we have helped over 3,000 adults in the Chattanooga community lead a full and meaningful life, while living with serious mental illness. Each day 75 to 100 participants, called Clubhouse members, come to the AIM Center to engage in recovery activities. By working together with staff and other members, individuals begin to feel needed and accepted, discover their strengths and abilities, and develop relationships based on mutual respect and shared contributions. AIM Center members have equal voices in all facets of the Clubhouse ‘s operations including planning leisure activities, hiring staff, making decisions about policies and procedures, and having input into the long-range planning of the Clubhouse. Services provided outside the Clubhouse model promote community integration, which includes transitional and supported employment, supported education, supported housing, and leisure activities. The program is open to persons with a diagnosed psychiatric disorder who are 18 years of age or older. Membership to AIM Center is without time limits, so individuals may return to AIM Center whenever they need or want additional support.

When we talk about “side by side” work in the Clubhouse, what does that really mean?

Clubhouse is centered around the idea of members and staff working side by side to carry out the daily operations of the Clubhouse. And when we say daily operations, we mean everything. This can include tasks as small as sanitizing door k***s and sweeping the floor, all the way to members serving on our Board of Directors. The Clubhouse belongs to our members, and they take an active role in running it in ways that reflect their voices, strengths, and goals.

Our staff come in each day to support our members in that work. We help members figure out what meaningful work they want to do, encourage them to try new things, and support them in any way we can. We work together, and there is not a single task a staff member works on that a member cannot also be part of. That is the beauty of the Clubhouse model and the beauty of AIM Center.

It is this philosophy that equips our members to pursue their dreams and reach their goals outside of the Clubhouse, too. 🧡

Over the past six months, AIM Center completed a comprehensive strategic planning process with our friends at Bridge Innovate to prepare for our next five years of impact. As a result, we’ve entered what we are affectionately calling a “growth spurt.” 🌱

To better meet the needs of adults living with serious mental illness in Chattanooga (and beyond 😉) , we have restructured portions of our team to align with our long-term goals, strengthening leadership capacity, clarifying roles, and preparing to hire new team members in key program areas.

This evolution positions AIM to expand services, deepen partnerships, and support more individuals on their recovery journeys than ever before. We’re grateful for the strong foundation that has brought us here, and excited about where we’re headed.

You’ll see familiar faces may have grown into new roles and that we are hiring for a number of positions right now! If you know a potential candidate, tag them in the post below, or send them this listing! We’re looking for top notch individuals to help us grow in our next phase.

If you've ever met Aaron, you know he loves TV game shows. He often asks people about their favorite game show or host. If he had to choose, his favorite would be Press Your Luck, hosted by the late Peter Tomarken.

During unit meeting this morning, Aaron shared a Black History Month fact that connects to his love of game shows. Adam Wade (1935–2022) was a singer and actor who made history as the first Black host of a nationally televised American game show. In 1975, he hosted Musical Chairs on CBS. The show featured musical guest performances and ran for 26 episodes.

When Aaron isn't sharing fun facts like this one, he helps keep AIM Center’s digital signage up to date. We appreciate him for keeping our community informed and engaged!

Socials are such an important part of the Clubhouse. 🧡

For many people living with a mental health diagnosis, isolation is very real and very hard. That is why having a place to belong matters so much. At AIM Center, no one has to navigate recovery alone.

Socials are a meaningful and regularly scheduled part of Clubhouse life. We host them often throughout the month, including some weekday evenings after hours, select weekends, and special daytime celebrations for holidays. And today, we came together to celebrate Valentine’s Day as a Clubhouse!

Our socials are filled with fun, games, music, laughter, and good food, but most importantly, connection. These all day gatherings are especially meaningful because even more members are able to join. It gives us the chance to spend intentional time together and strengthen our community.

It was a wonderful way to wrap up the week, and we are carrying these good vibes with us into the weekend. 🧡

We had such a wonderful time earlier this week supporting our friends at NAMI Chattanooga as they kicked off their Sharing Hope series!

NAMI Sharing Hope is designed to open up meaningful conversations around mental health and wellness through a three-part community conversation series grounded in the sharing of sacred stories and guided dialogue focused on mental wellness and support. Sharing Hope is an initiative created by Black and Brown communities, for Black and Brown communities.

The kickoff event brought together mental health resources from across the community and created space for thoughtful, productive conversations with peers and community members. We were truly honored to be there, connect with others, and be part of such an impactful and welcoming gathering!

We’re in the heart of the cold winter months, and as a Clubhouse, we decided to pivot from Salad Bar Tuesdays to Soup Tuesdays, and they’re already a hit! 😋

Yesterday’s soup was homemade Chicken & Dumplings, led by Shacole during our work-ordered day. It was definitely a favorite around the Clubhouse and truly hit the spot on a chilly day!

Shacole loves taking care of her Clubhouse community, whether that’s supporting members during the work-ordered day or helping feed the Clubhouse a warm, homemade meal. 🧡

Did you know the very block where the AIM Center is located today holds an important place in Chattanooga’s history?

From 1947 to 1962, this site was home to Carver Memorial Hospital, one of the few municipally owned, tax-supported hospitals for Black Americans in the United States before hospital desegregation. Named after Dr. George Washington Carver, the hospital was fully accredited and equipped with an operating room, laboratory, X-ray services, and a maternity and nursery unit. It provided critical care at a time when access was deeply unequal.

Carver Memorial Hospital employed Black physicians, nurses, and medical professionals who served the community with dedication and skill when other hospitals excluded Black patients and providers. Although the hospital closed in 1962, its legacy remains.

We are proud to recognize how our very location holds rich history for Chattanooga, and how that legacy of care, resilience, and community continues to inspire the work we do today. 🧡
