Have you heard of the BEI Interpreter Certification? BEI stands for Board for Evaluation of Interpreters. BEI started in Texas as an in-state interpreter certification. There are three levels of certification (basic, advanced, and master) along with specialized certifications for legal, medical, and tri-lingual (ASL, English and Spanish). BEI is a recognized certification in 20 states, and is included in the proposed Tennessee Interpreter License Bill. Learn more about BEI at:

One very valuable piece of assistive technology (AT) for Deaf is an alert system to signal events occurring in the home. This AT replaces auditory alerts with flashing lights and vibrating shakers. Deaf Awareness Month Highlight: Douglas Tilden was a Deaf Sculptor, known as the Michelangelo of the West. He was born in 1860 in Chico, California. As a child, he used drawings to communicate before learning sign language at the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley. While there, his career as an artist began to flourish.

The National Anthem will be performed in ASL by Sonibert Wood at the Chattanooga Lookouts baseball game in August 17, 2025 at 2:00pm.

Sonibert Wood is a proud Hard of Hearing actress and performer. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Florida, she has called Chattanooga home since 2004. Sonibert has been active in the local theater scene, performing in numerous stage productions, and recently appeared in the film JESUS by Deaf Mission Films. She carries a deep love for the performing arts and is passionate about representing and uplifting the Deaf community.
