Check out this recent article by the Chattanooga Times Free Press highlighting our new pilot program using innovative technology to help diagnose autism in children as young as 16 months, making earlier intervention possible for families in our community.

This program was made possible through the generosity of our StarNight 2025 supporters.

Siskin Children's Institute in Chattanooga has begun a pilot program for a technology that can diagnose autism in children as young as 16 months old, enabling providers to intervene earlier than the common diagnosis test.

🏀💛 What an incredible day at the Unified Special Olympics Basketball Tournament at McCallie School

We are so proud of all the athletes who competed! A special shoutout to Noah, who spent three years at Siskin Children’s Institute. It is such a joy to see him thriving on the court.

His dad, Andy McBryar, coaches the Chattanooga State Community College Tiger Access basketball team, and the Signal Mountain High School Cheerleaders brought incredible energy as volunteers. 🎉👏

Valentine’s Day activities don’t have to be fancy to be meaningful 💗

Simple, play-based ideas at home can support fine motor skills, coordination, creativity, and focus—all while having fun together.

❤️ Sensory Bins: This is a great way to work on general fine motor skills, utensil usage and increasing tactile exploration. Use taste safe options like dry rice, beans, and cereal in case any pieces end up in tiny mouths. Including a small container and spoon/scoop encourages utensil usage and improves skills needed for self feeding.

🎨 Coloring Sheets/Crafts: Using shortened markers or broken crayons can encourage better grasp for coloring. Having the child hold the paper still with opposing hand on tabletop or on the wall can promote bilateral coordination skills. Add some flare with glitter, stickers, and pom poms to make it your own!

📚 Holiday- themed Books: This is a fun way to talk about upcoming holidays to increase speech and language, work on reading comprehension and sustained attention. Talk about pictures on the page, ask about the story and talk about your favorite holiday activities.

💌 Coffee filter ring toss: Great activity for coordination, visual motor skills and social skills. Cut up some coffee filters and place on old plastic container, but paper plates and a paper towel roll would do the same thing. Toss the coffee filters/paper plates onto a paper towel roll while taking turns.

Our Story

More than a half century ago, two Chattanooga businessmen devoted their lives to serving their community and reaching out to people with disabilities. Today, their legacy lives on at Siskin Children’s Institute. In 1942, Garrison Siskin suffered a life-threatening injury, and surgeons told him that his leg would have to be amputated. He prayed to God that if his leg were spared, he would dedicate the rest of his life to helping others. The next morning, his prayers had been answered. When Mose learned of the vow, he told his brother, “If it’s your promise, it’s my promise, and we will keep it together.” They established the Siskin Foundation in 1950; and nine years later, they opened a rehabilitation center to provide outpatient services, including physical therapy, speech and language therapy, and even free dental care. A highlight of the facility was a preschool for young children with physical disabilities and developmental delays. Long before laws were passed to guarantee that children with disabilities must have the right to education, Mose and Garrison Siskin developed programs to educate children with special needs. Today, their commitment to helping children with disabilities continues at Siskin Children’s Institute, which is dedicated to making life better for children with special needs and their families. Help us keep the promise by making a donation to help impact the lives of children with special needs.
