Dr. Erica L. Bailey joined Epic Optical in 2024. Raised in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, she spent her growing up years in the rural town of Joseph, Oregon.

Dr. Bailey received her Bachelor of Health Science & Doctorate of Optometry degrees from Pacific University. Dr. Bailey is proud to be a second-generation Optometrist. She considers it a wonderful opportunity to continue the legacy of enhancing the vision of her patients. In her free time, she loves to listen to Audiobooks and travel with her husband, Tyler, and their grumpy little dog Marv.

Dr. Jeffry M. Carkner joined EPIC Optical in 2020. He owned his own family practice for 28 years in Portland, OR, before moving to Chattanooga to be with his wife Lisa. His grown children live in Portland and Fayetteville (U of A). He received his bachelor of science from Lewis and Clark College and his OD degree from Pacific University College of Optometry. He is a big soccer fan and enjoys the outdoors and travel.

Installment #2 of "Get to know your doctor"
Dr. Shayna L. Bowman joined EPIC Optical in 2021. Born and raised in the Ooltewah area, she was thrilled to return home after living in Oregon and Michigan for 12 years. She graduated with a Bachelor's of Science degree from Southern Adventist University and received her Doctor of Optometry degree from Pacific University in Oregon. She fell in love with optometry on a mission trip to Kenya in 2005 and since then has provided eye care on mission trips to Guatemala and India. Dr. Bowman lives in Collegedale with her husband, Keith, and their two children, Keith III and Kenna. They love hiking and playing board games.

Growing up in rural northern California, Dr. Appel’s first career was in automotive repair. After several years as an automotive technician, he decided to retrain into a more personally fulfilling career. He graduated from Washington State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, then obtained his Doctorate of Optometry from Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR. After graduation, he practiced in Huntsville, AL, then moved back to the west coast to be closer to family. Realizing how much they loved The South, Dr. Appel, his wife, and his 3 children moved to Lakesite, TN. He greatly enjoys many outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, off-roading, and riding motorcycles.
