It is the oldest funeral home in McIntosh County, evolving as part of Koch and Thompson Hardware and Undertakers on Gentry Ave in 1908. The Smith family purchased the funeral home in 1954 and they continued to serve the families of McIntosh County until 2006 when John and Kim Garrett purchased the business. Today many of his relatives are business owners and are still working and living in the Checotah community. John's funeral service career started in the very early 80's in Muskogee. John has been a licensed Funeral Director and Professional Embalmer since 1985. Kim is a Registered Nurse and now works with John in the daily operations of Garrett Family Funeral Home.
