Congratulations Dr. Kelsey Romanowski, on being chosen to be Chief Resident for the Pediatric Dentistry Residency program at Geisinger Medical Center, for the 2023-2024 academic year. We are very proud of you!

07/06/2021

We hope you are all having a lovely holiday weekend! It is time to get to know our kind and caring Dr. Romanowksi!

Dr. Kelsey Romanowski is an Endwell native general dentist. She graduated cm laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from SUNY Geneseo and received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Romanowski completed a one-year General Practice Residency at Faxton-St. Luke’s Hospital in Utica NY, where she discovered her passion for treating the dental needs of pediatric patients. After working at a pediatric office in Buffalo, NY for the last year, Dr.
Romanowski has decided to return to her roots and join the Valley Dental team! She is very excited to be able to help out the community in her hometown.
Dr. Romanowski believes that creating good dentist-patient relationships while young, helps to foster the confidence to become confident, less anxious dental patients in the future. With that in mind, Dr. Romanowski wants to treat children’s dental needs, while
also making it a comfortable and fun experience for both patients and parents. Outside of dentistry, Dr. Romanowski’s interests include cooking and baking, she is always looking for new recipes to try and for people to taste test. She also enjoys playing videogames with friends, some of her favorites being the Legend of Zelda,
Pokémon as well as other Nintendo classics.
At home Dr. Romanowski has her cat Cricket, who has even trained her cat to be able to sit, shake, and even roll over, as well as her family cats Sinbad and Ollie who have been in her family since she was in college.

We are so happy to have you on our team Dr. Romanowski!!!

NYS Lifts COVID Restrictions, but No Change for Healthcare Settings

As of June 15, capacity limits, social distancing, disinfection and mask protocols and health screenings will no longer be mandatory for the majority of businesses, including offices, sporting events, manufacturing, malls, movie theaters, camps, construction sites, restaurants, amusement parks and retail stores. However, the state’s health guidelines continue to be in effect for large-scale indoor event venues, pre-K to grade 12 schools, public transit, homeless shelters, correctional facilities, nursing homes, and healthcare settings, per CDC guidelines.

Study: Saliva is not a big source of aerosol droplets

An Ohio State University study published in the Journal of Dental Research found that 0.1% to 1.2% of microbes in aerosols distributed throughout the room during dental procedures were from saliva, while 78% were from irrigants. The findings suggest dental procedures pose a low risk for transmission of SARS-CoV-2, and support results of a study in the Journal of the American Dental Association, which found a COVID-19 positivity rate of less than 1% among dentists, ADA News reports. "These findings should help us open up our practices, make ourselves feel safe about our environment and, for patients, get their oral and dental problems treated," said Purnima Kumar, D.D.S., Ph.D., a member of the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs and the study's senior author.
Full Story:

The findings, published May 12 in the Journal of Dental Research, is the latest study to demonstrate that visiting the dentist remains safe, with low risk for transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

COVID-19 Rate Among Dentists Less Than 1%, ADA Study Finds

The ADA News (10/15, Versaci) reports that an ADA Science & Research Institute (ADASRI) and Health Policy Institute study found “fewer than 1% of dentists nationwide” were “estimated to have a confirmed or probable COVID-19 infection” as of June. “This is very good news for dentists and patients,” said Dr. Marcelo Araujo, PhD, CEO of the ADASRI, chief science officer of the ADA, and senior author of the report. “This means that what dentists are doing – heightened infection control and increased attention to patient and dental team safety – is working.” The findings were published online ahead of print by The Journal of the American Dental Association.
NBC News (10/15, Syal) reports that the “researchers conducted a nationwide survey June 8 with responses from more than 2,000 dentists from across the country,” finding 0.9% “had either confirmed or probable cases of COVID-19.” The survey also found that 99.7% of dentists “were using what was referred to as ‘enhanced infection control procedures.’”
Healthline (10/15, Pugle) reports that Marko Vujicic, PhD, chief economist and vice president of the ADA Health Policy Institute, said, “The fact that dentistry was named one of the most at-risk professions for infection, but has a far lower prevalence of infection compared to other health professions, is not a coincidence.” He added, “The profession has taken this issue extremely seriously, and it shows.”

Dental Visits Listed Among Appointments People Should Prioritize Right Now

In a consumer-focused article, U.S. News & World Report (9/9, Howley) said, “The coronavirus pandemic that took hold this past spring upended normal life for just about everyone, and for many people, that meant delaying health care appointments.” Now that more is known about the virus and how it is transmitted and access to personal protective equipment has improved, the article stated that “health care providers from across the whole health care spectrum are urging patients to reschedule appointments that may have been canceled or postponed.” With this in mind, the article said “any routine appointment that has been put off should be rescheduled as soon as possible,” and dental visits are among “appointments that might take priority.”
