Funeral Services for Schunta' Alexander Chesney were held 1:00pm Saturday June 7, 2025 at the Works for Christ Christian Center in Sanford, North Carolina; Apostle Dr. Alice Ho**er, pastor. A private visitation was held on Friday June 6th at Exousia Christian Fellowship Church in Sanford. Interment is scheduled for July 1, 2025 at Sandhills Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake (Fort Liberty/Fort Bragg), North Carolina. Military Funeral Honors will be rendered at that time.
Schunta’ Alexander Chesney, our Brother in Christ, was born to the late Deacon Wilbur L. Chesney and the late Shirley Y. Chesney (teacher) on March 12, 1974. Schunta’ was a highly intelligent child. He excelled in his studies and maintained a driven curiosity about many things throughout his life. He graduated from Lee County Senior High School in 1993 with a high school diploma and entered into the U.S. Army in January 1994. On active duty, he served as a Medical Laboratory Specialist and achieved the rank of E5/Sergeant.
Upon exiting active duty service, Schunta’ pursued a bachelor’s degree in biology for several years at St. Augustine University in Raleigh, NC. He then transitioned to the North Carolina Army National Guard achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant. During his military career, Schunta’ received the following medals and commendations: The Army Achievement Medal (3rd Award), the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Expert Marksman Certification, and completed the challenging year-long Advanced Medical Laboratory Course.
Schunta’ was known for his witty sense of humor. Regardless of the setting he never met a stranger. His magnetic personality and infectious charisma always made everyone feel at ease. Schunta’ possessed a passion for learning and was engaged in several business endeavors. Schunta’ loved his family and he loved the Lord taking time to teach the Bible in his home during family time. He was a man of faith, even until the time that the Lord called him home. He worked with many pastors, overseers and bishops to strengthen their churches in his service to the Lord. He was also an advocate for veterans and their families to help secure resources for their needs. He led many veterans to know Christ as their Savior.
Schunta’ is survived by his wife Jolene Lynn Ostergren Chesney of 22 years and his precious children: Simone, Journi, Jaedyn, Shane, Shaun, Sara, David, Elijah and Eian; his siblings, Jovonnie (Lynn), Michelle and Steve (Tonya); his nieces Brittany, Kaitlyn (Cameron) and nephew Stephen. He is also survived by a host of loving cousins and close friends.
Morris Funeral Cottage of Cheraw was entrusted to serve the Chesney family.
