Back in 1894, in the small town of Erwin, Dr. Clark and Dr. Palmer opened a drug store which was named Pioneer Drug Store. However, the drug store was moved into the town of Cherokee along with what was left of the town of Erwin. Dr. Clark, the first physician in Cherokee and his partner, Dr. Palmer, sold the drug store to M.L. Klink in 1901.
Leonard Smith and his brother made the truck to Cherokee and decided to stay. They purchased Pioneer Drug Store in 1905, in which then the name was changed to Smith Drug Store. A few years later, in 1908, the drug store was relocated to its current location. During this time, the drug store served food in the balcony. Mrs. Smith was known for her soup and pies she sold at the drug store. However, later on, the eatery was replaced with a gift gallery.
Back in the day, the drug store was known for many things. The store was even the place to get piano lessons from Mr. Smith's sister-in-law, Wilda Albright. There were even a few recitals held in the building. A few years passed, and the store earned a new owner. Palmer and Gladys Eash bought the Smith Drug Store in 1945. During the holiday season, Mrs. Eash was known for her special gift wrapping that featured ribbon roses in the bow.
The Eash sisters, Joy Hawkins, and Peggy Page were always seen helping at the store. Goldie Tyer-Guffy, a long-time employee, kept the store busy with her delicious malts and fountain drinks.
Until the state started supplying textbooks for schools, Smith Drug Store was the place to get textbooks and school supplies. In the '40s and '50s, the drug store was also a popular place for teenagers to hang out with their friends. The south wall of the store included the malt machine and booths for kids to sit at.
In 1960, Lyle Hawkins returned to Cherokee after graduating from Southwestern State University's School of Pharmacy to help his father run the store. Lyle and his wife, Joy, bought the store in July of 1966. Lyle's son Damon Hawkins followed in his father's footsteps, and also graduated from SWOSU's School of Pharmacy and returned to Cherokee to help at the store.
Fast forward to 2000, Damon and his wife, Rebecca, became the owners of Smith Drug Store. Since then they have made some new additions. Rebecca has then revamped the east side of the drug store’s house decor/gift section, and added a clothing section, whereas Damon still runs the pharmacy on the west side of the store. The store now has a bridal and baby registry but has kept the offer of free gift wrapping and delivery in town.
The two are keeping the tradition alive as the four previous owners of the 114-year-old store would appreciate.
