In honor of Veteran’s Day, we’re celebrating our colleagues who have served in the United States military. Today, we’re proud to highlight Chelsea Short-Conte, Jefferson Health’s Regional Marketing Business Partner – East Region and former Senior Airman in the United States Air Force (2006–2010).

Read on for a glimpse into her Air Force journey and how her service continues to shape the work she does today.

Where and when did you serve?

I served in the U.S. Air Force from 2006 to 2010, stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany and McGuire Air Base in New Jersey, working in air transportation and logistics coordinating aircraft, personnel, and supplies across Europe and deployed areas. I later deployed to Al Taqaddum Air Base in Iraq, serving in Combat Control Operations alongside the Marines. There I managed airfield operations in an active combat zone tracking incoming and outgoing aircraft, communicating with ground crews and ATOC, and calling for clearances to keep missions running safely and on time. Every minute mattered, and precision was everything. I also coordinated Aeromedical Evacuation missions and Angel Flights missions for fallen service members. When those flights came in or went out, I helped transfer coffins with honor and care. Those flights were some of the most meaningful moments of my service and a constant reminder of the true cost of freedom.

What does being a Veteran mean to you personally?

Being a Veteran means service and compassion. It’s about showing up for others whether it’s your team, your community, or someone who just needs support. My time in the Air Force, especially serving In Iraq, taught me that real leadership isn’t about rank or position; it’s about protecting and caring for your Wingman in every way you can.

How has your experience in service shaped the way you approach your work at Jefferson?

Every chapter of my career from coordinating air missions to leading marketing strategy has been people focused. At Jefferson, that mission continues. Whether it’s supporting our various clinical teams with marketing support or helping connect patients to care, my goal is still the same: take care of people and make an impact that matters.

A permanent tribute to the American military personnel who have not returned from conflict can be found in a garden at the center of Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital's campus: a lone, empty chair. Quietly honoring their sacrifice, the "Missing Man" chair, as similar installations are known, is never sat in, symbolically representing the missing military personnel's absence in the lives of loved ones and in their communities while also serving as a testimony to those loved ones still waiting for closure. For veterans and their family members, the "Missing Man" chair can also be a way to remember fallen comrades.

Put in place in 2020, the efforts to secure Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital's "Missing Man" chair were led by Julia Muller-Petermann, a Nurse Manager in Jefferson's Emergency Department, and her husband, Christian Petermann, a veteran, who were both involved with the local chapter of national veteran organization Rolling Thunder. While most famous for their motorcycle rallies and escorts to welcome military home, Rolling Thunder raises awareness about POW/MIA issues, support veterans' rights and assists veterans and their families in a variety of ways. The devoted couple arranged for Rolling Thunder to donate the "Missing Man" chair, with the actual fabrication being done by Petermann himself.

Jefferson's "Missing Man: chair is made of black metal and features the renowned POW-MIA symbol (a silhouette of a prisoner of war (POW) before a guard tower and barbed wire and the words "You Are Not Forgotten" ) cut out of the chair's backrest. Cut into the seat are the words "Rolling Thunder, Chapter 5, NJ."
