A TENS unit (short for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a small device used for pain relief. It works by sending gentle electrical impulses through the skin to stimulate the nerves in the area where you place the electrode pads.
Hereβs a quick overview:
β’ β‘ Purpose: Helps reduce pain from muscle tension, joint pain, arthritis, nerve pain, or injuries.
β’ ποΈ How it works: The electrical pulses can block pain signals from reaching the brain and also encourage the body to release endorphins (natural painkillers).
β’ π Where to place pads: Depends on where you have pain β for example, near the lower back, shoulders, knees, or neck (but never over the heart, throat, or open wounds).
β’ π Typical use: 15β30 minutes at a time, a few times per day if needed.
β’ β οΈ Precautions: Avoid using it if you have a pacemaker, are pregnant (on abdominal area), or have heart rhythm problems unless approved by a doctor.
