๐Ÿ’™ Supporting Parents, Protecting Babies: Understanding Shaken Baby Syndrome ๐Ÿ’™

As we close out Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, our Health Department is taking time to raise awareness about Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) and the stressors many new parents face. Welcoming a new baby brings joy and excitement, but it can also be exhausting and stressful. Sleepless nights, constant crying, and the demands of caring for a newborn can feel overwhelming, and itโ€™s important for caregivers to know: you are not alone, and help is available.

๐Ÿ”น What is Shaken Baby Syndrome?
Shaken Baby Syndrome is a serious brain injury caused by forcefully shaking an infant or young child. It can lead to severe brain damage, lifelong disability, or even death. Most often, SBS happens when a caregiver becomes frustrated with a babyโ€™s crying, but it is always preventable.

๐Ÿ’  Steps to Prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome:
๐Ÿ’  If you feel overwhelmed, place your baby safely in their crib and take a moment to calm yourself.
๐Ÿ’  Call a friend, family member, or support line for help.
๐Ÿ’  Remember, itโ€™s normal for babies to cry. Sometimes they just need time to settle.

By raising awareness and supporting one another, we can help protect our most vulnerable children and strengthen families during the early weeks of parenthood. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to us at 618-826-5007

Older adults and infants are at a higher risk for severe RSV.
Immunizations can protect them. ๐Ÿ’‰

Vaccines are recommended for:
โžก๏ธ Adults ages 50-74 with an increased risk for severe RSV
โžก๏ธ All adults over the age of 74

Babies can be protected from severe RSV by one of two
immunization options:
โžก๏ธ A maternal RSV vaccine given at 32-36 weeks during
pregnancy
โžก๏ธ A shot for babies younger than 8 months

Talk to your healthcare provider about whether the vaccine
might be right for you.

Randolph County Health Department is an official Drug Overdose Prevention Program Site

Through a partnership with the Illinois Department of Human Services โ€“ Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery (IDHS/SUPR), we are now able to provide vital overdose prevention resources to our community.

We now offer:
- Free Naloxone (Narcan): a life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses
- Training: on how and when to administer Narcan
- Fentanyl/Xylazine test strips: to help detect dangerous substances
- Information on local recovery meetings and support groups

Our new distribution box is located in the lobby of our Chester office. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to support harm reduction, recovery, and community health.
